US National Championships/Dannon Duathlon Sunday, July 15, 2001. 7AM Start. Carlsbad, California. 10k run/40k bike/5k run. Non-drafting $6,000 Pro purse. ESPN coverage. www.dannonduathlon.com
The US will crown a new women's Pro Champion Sunday in Carlsbad because none of the previous winners are returning. Of the recent champions, Nancy Riedel has retired and recently had her first baby. Last year's champion Marjan Huizing will miss the race, primarily because of a knee injury. And Kimberly Bruckner, who despite her domination in 1999 and 2000 never won the title, is bike racing for Saturn.
That leaves the women's title up for grabs. Heather Gollnick and Andrea Ratkovic both go into the race as favorites, and both have won one race in the Dannon Series this year. Whoever wins the title will still have to battle for the overall title against Canadian Heather Fuhr, who is making her first appearance in the Dannon series, as well as Denmark's Gudrun Stephenson, winner of a few Powerman Duathlons over the last two years.
Greg Watson returns as the defending men's champion, although his Dannon winning streak was snapped at Dannon Alpharetta last month. Travis Kuhl was the man to break the streak, and the longer running segments of this race will play to his strength. Eighteen pro men are registered so far, and all but one of the top five Americans from 2000 return. Denmark's Henrik Svarre, last year's third place finisher and the second place finisher at Powerman Tennessee, is the only European entered in the event. Michael Tobin is making his first appearance at the US Pro Championships in several years and he will also contend for the title.
The Pro start lists are listed below, followed by the top finishers from the 1998, 1999 and 2000 Pro Championships.
