Ironman Switzerland
Zurich. Sunday, August 5, 2001

Hungary's Peter Kropko battled Christoph Mauch in his home country, and Kropko was the stronger runner and the victor. Kropko took the lead 19 miles into the run as he ran a 2:43 marathon, fastest on the day and seven minutes faster than Mauch. Olivier Bernhard dropped out of the race 2km into the run, suffering from illness. Stefan Riesen and Bruno von Flue, also of Switzerland, took third and fourth. Early leader Jan Rehula was fifth.

The women's field went to German Silvia Vaupel. Vaupel took the lead 16 miles into the run as she held on to a two minute victory over Angela Milne of Australia. This was Vaupel's second Ironman of the year, following a fifth place finish at Ironman Lanzarote in May. Ariane Gutknecht finished third. She was the top Swiss finisher, and she matched her finish from one year ago.
