It was almost a DeBoom double at the sold out Boulder Peak Triathlon on Sunday. Nicole DeBoom looked strong in taking the women's race, while husband Tim DeBoom came up a few seconds short in his runner-up finish to South African Conrad Stoltz.

Under ideal weather conditions 1500 competitors raced the triathlon and duathlon. The pro triathlon wave started first, but it was the top duathletes that were the first to cross the line. A year after finishing second by just 3 seconds, Chris Tolonen won the men's race over New Zealand's David Rowlands. Tolonen completed the first 5k in 16:02, which left him 35 seconds behind early leader Josephus Leroux. Tolonen soon took the lead, but then Rowlands came zooming by him on the bike. Tolonen stayed within 30 seconds of Rowlands heading onto the last run, and a 16:30 final 5k Tolonen was enough to give him a comfortable 54 second victory. LeRoy Popowski finished third.

Inge McClory was a repeat winner in the women's duathlon. McClory led the first run in 18:27, with Danelle Ballengee 38 seconds back. Ballengee, who has spent most of the last two years mountain biking and adventure racing, slowly gained ground on McClory during the bike, although she didn't realize how close she was until she saw McClory in T2. By then it was too late, as McClory was the stronger run and she increased her lead over the final 5k. Kerrie Wlad finished third for the second year in a row.

In the men's triathlon it looked like Conrad Stoltz was on his way to an easy repeat of last year's victory. Stoltz and Marc Lees were first out of the water, and then Stoltz pounded the bike and left T2 with a 1:40 advantage over Lees. Lee came into T2 with Tim DeBoom, Chuckie V, and Tim Luchinske. Luchinske joined that group after recording the fastest bike of the day (by over two minutes) to compensate for his slower swim.

DeBoom was slower through transition, but then he put the hammer down on the run and started chipping away at the two minute deficit to Stoltz. DeBoom, who had run a 20:04 4 miler on Thursday, ran out of room and finished seven seconds behind Stoltz. Marc Lees held onto third, followed by Luchinske and Chuckie V.

Monica Caplan was first out of the water in the women's triathlon, with Nicole DeBoom in third place. DeBoom took the lead on the bike, with Teri Duthie and Susan Williams chasing. DeBoom came out of T2 with Duthie and Williams 30 seconds behind. Duthie made a charge toward overtaking DeBoom, but Nicole was strong throughout the run and maintained her lead. Duthie was second, and Williams third. Lori Bowden was the fastest runner and finished sixth.

Props should be given to the 5th place finisher in the elite triathlon wave, Nate Llerandi. Nate, a former stud pro, is now working full time, has a wife and two children, works out only 7-9 hours per week, and he STILL finished only 2:36 down to the winner!! Don't we wish we could all be that talented!?
