Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro Tour Round Two Okahu Bay, New Zealand. Sunday December 2 Swim 500m - Bike 20km - Run 5km
I've seen them both win races before, but never at the same time, said their delighted mum Irene just after brother and sister duo, Bevan and Fiona Docherty, had crossed the line to take top honors in round two of the Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro Tour in Okahu Bay this morning. Originally from Taupo they are both spending the summer training and racing in the Auckland region.
First to bring home the spoils was Bevan, who made the tactical move of deciding to do the run leg barefoot on the 5km grass course. That move enabled him to start the final discipline with a five second lead whilst series leader Nathan Richmond and Graham O'Grady lost a few seconds in transition.
I had a look at the course when I arrived and decided to risk running without shoes, thinking that if I could get a small gap it would be a bit easier to extend my lead from then on, said the delighted winner after the race. It's my first time in the Air New Zealand Triathlon Pro tour so I can't think of a better way to start.
Docherty extend his lead to fifteen seconds over the first three km and then held on over the last lap. Richmond who previously been nothing but the winner in this series held on to his overall leader's spot, but was full of praise for Docherty's efforts. Bevan had a great race out there today. I always know he's a tough competitor, and today he proved it. Hamilton's Graham O'Grady rounded off the podium finishers with a strong showing in third.
Sister, Fiona's winning move really started to happen several months ago when she made the choice to move to Auckland and concentrate on her swimming over the winter. I decided not to go to Europe this year but to really work on my swimming to try and make the grade as a triathlete not just a duathlete said Fiona, I've never been able to stay near Evelyn in the water before so I was delighted to even see her.
Williamson made a brave attempt for a solo win but was unable to get the time gap she needed over the chasing bunch, as first Docherty then Hamilton's fast improving Sam Warriner, caught the better known Williamson on the 5km run leg.
Men 1 Bevan Docherty 0:53:39 2 Nathan Richmond 0:53:54 3 Graham O'Grady 0:54:36
Women 1 Fiona Docherty 1:00:45 2 Samantha Warriner 1:01:09 3 Evelyn Williamson 1:01:23
