The ITU recently decided that at every 2002 ITU World Championship each country will be allowed to enter 18 athletes per age group. This includes the short and long distance Triathlon and Duathlon World Championships, as well as the Aquathlon and Winter Triathlon World Championships. Previously each country was allowed to enter 12 athletes per age group.

I wonder if ITU asked any age group athlete for their opinion before increasing the slots. I doubt it. They simply want more money. It gives more people the opportunity to compete at Worlds, but I think it makes it less of an accomplishment to make the team.

The person who is complaining about the number of slots is probably a top age grouper who should be racing pro or is in an age group that is not competive (ie.30-34, where the top finishers could and should be low level Pro's if they want real comp.).
The bigger the World Championships are the better for the sport. Would you say the Hawaii Ironman is too big? It's not special because there is 1,500 people in it?

so what if there are more athletes. That makes it so much sweeter if you place well. I love races with lots of athletes. I guess if there's only a hand full in your age group and you had a bad race you can at least say you got fifth or so, not my idea of competition though. Cheers and train hard!

I think that this is excellent especially for the US because it increases the chance that only the best will be there. Travel is expensive and sometimes people can't always afford it for Nationals and Worlds so when there are more age group slots then they can spread them out across the country. This makes it easier and cheaper to get to a qualifying race and then they can afford to go to worlds becasue they didn't use the money going to a national qualifying race. Not all country's will use the 18 slots but some like the US and Canada will use the full amount becasue they have the number of athletes.
