The ITU recently allowed each country to qualify 18 athletes per age group for both the long and short course Duathlon World Championships. Here is how the 18 slots will be allocated among the US qualifying races:
The following 2002 duathlon events will be qualifiers for the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Duathlon World Championships on Oct. 19-20 in Alpharetta, Ga.:
* 4 slots Powerman Alabama Duathlon (March 24; Birmingham, Ala.) * 2 slots Mount Rainier Duathlon (April 21; Enumclaw, Wash.) * 4 slots Blackwater Traverse Duathlon (April 21; Cambridge, Md.) * 2 slots Apple Duathlon (June 15; Sartell, Minn.) * 6 slots Dannon Duathlon Carlsbad - U.S. National Championships (July 14; Carlsbad, Calif.)
The following 2002 duathlon events will be qualifiers for the ITU Duathlon Long Course World Championships on Aug. 17-18 in Weyer, Austria:
* 2 slots Strutters Duathlon (April 20; San Angelo, Texas) * 6 slots Powerman Tennessee Duathlon (May 5; College Grove, Tenn.) * 6 slots Saturn Duathlon (May 26; Columbus, Ohio) * 4 slots Hagg Lake Duathlon (July 6; Hagg Lake, Ore.)

First of all I am not complaining. But I think the qualifiers for the short course duathlon limits the slots in the midwest division. The eastern region gets 4 slots, southern region gets 4 slots, the western region gets 8 slots( nationals and Mt. Ranier), and the midwest region only gets 2 slots.
I thought that they would give all the "regional" qualifiers an equal number of slots with nationals getting more qualifiying slots plus any rolldowns from the regional qualifiers.
I just wish it would be an equal opportunity for each region to get a chance to do Worlds at Georgia.

I agree...I think the Apple Du and all midwest duathletes got screwed by only getting (2) spots. All (4) regional qualifiers should have got 3 spots with nationals getting 6. I'm disappointed with USAT's decision.

Maybe they could resolve the regional equity issue by moving the national championship around to someplace other than California. As an East Coaster, it would be nice to have the nationals somewhere closer. In addition, it seems like if you want nationals to be truly national, you should make it an equal distance to all competitors. Dannon Naperville should be an option.

I think the USAT did have the nationals at the APPLE Du about 2 years ago and the Saturn Du had the national championships for a couple of years.
I would like to see it be fair and equal for all duathletes in each region of the country.

A fair and equitable way would be to allow spots proportionate to the number of competitors in each region. If you allowed 4 spots in Alaska and 4 spots in San Diego, it would probably be easier to qualify in Alaska and that would not be fair and equitable.

I don't have a problem with the number of slots allocated per race. I'm doing Strutters which only allocates 2 slots. Personally, I would get more satisfaction knowing that I placed in the top 2 to make Team USA than to place # 6. If you're going to compete in the Worlds, you should be one of the best in the world.

Help me out. I have been running road races for years and have ridden a bike for almost as long. I just recently started to take riding seriously enough to add duathlons to my race schedule. I know this is a dumb question and with some research I could find out on my own...but would someone mind telling me how this duathlon world championship qualifying works? Thanks for the help.

To qualify for the world championships all you have to do is to compete in one of the designated world qualifier duathlons and place in the top two-or four in your age group. You then have to decide if you will accept the slot to the worlds. Once you accept the slot you will receive a packet with all the info about the world championships. Good Luck and I hope you qualify.

Also, spots can be passed down to the next finishers if they aren't accepted by the people that placed in the top 2, or 4, or 6 (depending on ther ace).

While you guys are whinging about the location of qualifiers and the number of spots available, spare a thought for me! I live about 40 minutes out of Wellington New Zealand, and the last duathlon worlds that were in the Southern Hemisphere were in 1994, and they were in Australia. I just thought I would put things in perspective. Sorry to interrupt, carry on.

If the Duathlon worlds were in Australia, NBC would run their "live" coverage 36 hours later. CBC would carry it live in real time.

Maxxiss(sp?) is right- we've got a lot of chances to qualify in the US. And with 18 slots I don't think there's too much room for complaint. This regional stuff has merit but there's no great solution. Look how "easy" it will be geting a slot for the Long Distance race at Ohio (isn't that still in the midwest?).... just a counterpoint folks, no flaming please. I got cooked bad enough reminding folks about Bernhard's nandrolone bust... still medium rare.

Nationals always gets a fair number of slots regardless of what "region" it is in. The Nationals have only been on the west coast once in 10 years! If Nationals was say cancelled for some unforseen reason and it was moved to say Chicago then the whole west coast would only have two slots. If you look at a map you can see it is only 380 air miles from the upper mid-west (Detroit)to Blackwater, 820 to Alabama, 450 to Nashville. Two qualifiers are driving distance and the rest a few hours by plane. You have no idea how far it is from the west coast out to all the other qualifiers- and the time zones put you on the start line at 4am!
