The Colorado Iron Mountain Triathlon has changed its name to the 5430 Triathlon. The WTC, owner of the Ironman Triathlon, requested the change. The new name reflects the highest altitude in Boulder, CO. The date is set for August 26, 2001, starting from the Boulder Reservoir, and the distances, a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike followed by a 26.2 mile run, are unchanged.
Since the race was announced two weeks ago triathletes from around the world, including Antarctica, have shown an interest. Among those who have endorsed the race are Boulder local favorites Wes Hobson, Wolfgang Dittrich, Leslie Bentson and World Champion marathoner Mark Plaatjes. Tim and Nicole Deboom have extended their support and have offered to present finisher medals. Former Ironman Champion Scott Molina, who used to train in Boulder, has expressed an interest in coming out of retirement for the race.
