The European Winter Triathlon Cup opener in Oberstaufen saw the best ever race held in the Bavarian resort up to now. After the lack of snow, rain, cold temperatures with a chilling wind in the last years today's event not only was crowned by perfect conditions with sunshine and the whole area covered with snow but also a dramatic race with a 5 km (2 laps) run, 15 km (3 laps) MTN and 8 km (2 laps) x-country skiing.
While German world class triathlete Daniel Unger (starting in a VIP relay) scored the fastest run, world champion Zibi Szlufcik returned to transition area at the head of the winter triathlete armada with local Helmut Schiessel, Italian Alessandro Degasperi (who crashed in the first MTB lap and pulled out), Iwan Schuewey (SUI) and Daniel Antonioli (ITA), Benjamin Sonntag (GER), Marc Pschebizin (GER) and Marc Ruhe (LIE) following close behind. In the first bike lap Sonntag and Ruhe crashed giving Szlufcik to take the lead. But in the 2nd lap the bad luck was for the leader so Sonntag and Ruhe passed and attacked. Sonntag negotiated the faster transition, with Ruhe only meters behind. Szlufcik was about 30 sec away but managed with very a fast beginning to join the opponents on the x-country leg. Soon all three contenders where gliding one after the other on the scenic course in front of the Eviva Host Hotel.
But finally Ruhe and Sonntag managed to get away and performed the most exciting finish winter triathlon may have seen up to now. Both where heading shoulder to shoulder to the 2 lane finish area. The 21 year old German Benjamin Sonntag passed the line about one meter ahead of the Liechtenstein guy to win the 4th race of the season. Ruhe made it 2nd 21 sec ahead of Szlufcik with Iwan Schuwey and Daniel Antionioli behind.
In the women's race Sigrid Lang clocked the fasted run time with Marianne Vlasveld just 8 sec behind. But the Dutch proofed stronger on the bike and x-country leg to win over last year's winner Lang, who is preparing her final university exams (27 February). Gabi Pauli (GER) made it third with Swiss Karin Möbes absent with 2 broken ribs after her heavy crash in last weeks home race in Wildhaus.
The European Winter Triathlon Cup continues next Sunday with the event in Freudenstadt-Kniebis (serving as well as German Championships), Donovaly (SVK) on February 9th, the European Championships on March 2nd in Achensee (AUT) and the traditional finale in Mals (ITA) on march 10th.
