The 2001 USA Triathlon age group national rankings will be unveiled next week on the USA Triathlon web site (www.USATriathlon.org). The rankings are a fundamental service for USA Triathlon's 31,000 annual members. They provide end of year rankings in the 68 total age groups from the sports of triathlon and duathlon. Athletes must compete in at least three USA Triathlon sanctioned races to be eligible for the rankings program. In 2000, 9,304 athletes were ranked. In 2001, 11,895 are being ranked, an increase of 27.8 percent. The 2001 rankings are also being published in the USA Triathlon bi-monthly publication USA Triathlon Times. That issue is being sent to all USA Triathlon annual members on Feb. 15.
There is a significant change that will take place in 2002 with the USA Triathlon ranking system. Effective mid March, USA Triathlon will post ongoing rankings throughout the year on its web site (www.USATriathlon.org). The ongoing nature of the rankings will be highly reliant on race directors getting results into USA Triathlon in a timely manner. The rankings will provide to age group athletes an ongoing view as to how well they individually are stacking up with their age group peers throughout the nation. This new system is going to be a huge new component to add to the attractiveness of triathlon/duathlon for annual members as we move toward year's end.

Do people really think the ranking system means anything? Do 3 races in Podunk, USA & then with a little simple math you're compared to other triathletes that you've never actually competed against. I've always thought it was questionable to compare 10K times for different courses, but to compare triathlon times is just a complete joke. No big deal, but USAT could spend their money on better things.

Hey Anonymous get a clue. First, why don't you be a man/woman and post your name when you leave a remark. Why? Cause it let's me know you have a pair. Secondly, the rankings for triathletes and duathletes is not a waste of time. If you trained, raced and sacrificed for your sport it's often nice to know how you stack up against other competitors. Also, different races have different factorials associated with them. A race in East Podunk, that is USAT sanctioned, might have a race factorial of .80. Whereas the ITU World Championships will have a race factorial of 1.00. It's not all that complicated. If you actually went to the USAT website you might learn how they do these things. Also, there are some people out there who use these rankings to try and land some sort of sponsorship for the upcoming race season. Being able to say you were ranked 10th in your age group and that you were an USAT All American can help in this endeavor.
You know, I am sick and tired of all these people bashing USAT and the people who run that organization. Steve Locke, Tim Yount and all of the staff at USAT do a pretty damn good job. If you think that you can do a better job then give it a try. Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution. Quit your whining!

Thank You Bruce...
It's obvious that our "anonymous poster" is completely ignorant. This individual needs to get a clue It's also obvious that this person needs to train a little harder because he seems to be a "pack of the packer."
The USAT puts an enormous amount of time into organizing and running a great organization. Just take a look at the increase of the number of triathletes over the past year.
To add, the system devised compares times based on the factorials of a race.
Before putting a dumb ass comment on a tri board, please educated yourself...

I also think the money could be better spent. I really think it should be spent helping to develop the national teams. However, I am guesing that most of the USAT members wish to see the rankings. I think the task of trying to rank thousands of age group triathletes is very daunting and the method fair, but not true to the meaning of "all-american" or "national ranking". I say this because in order to come up with any meaningfull ranking, USAT has to make rules such as 3 USAT sanctioned race minimum and that it only applies to USA. And, yeah its a nice statement to make, but I think it's true meaning is beyond the comprehension of all but a few thousand people in North America.
But, I do think that the USAT staff does a good job of running the organization. I have only interacted with Tim Yount at the Du world champs in 1999, and he was organized and impressed that he tried to address all of the concerns of hundreds of participants.
