Who Won The Money?

At least 57 triathletes and duathletes from around the world earned prize money the weekend of January 26 & 27. A total of US$97,000 was awarded at Ironman Malaysia (US$50,000), the Accenture Australian Sprint Championships (US$26,000), the Pucon Half Ironman in Chile (US$20,000), and the Club La Santa International Duathlon in the Canary Islands (US$1,000). In addition, there was a triathlon in Chile with an unknown amount of prize money.

For multisport, last weekend's racing offered a significant amount of money. In comparison to last weekend's PGA Tour event (golf) in Phoenix, the 14th place finisher earned more money ($100,000) then was awarded in all triathlons and duathlons around the world. The top 44 finishers at the PGA event each earned more money ($15,600) than the top earning triathletes ($11,010).

With $50,000, Ironman Malaysia had the biggest prize purse. The winners each received $8,500, plus a share of any money that was not awarded. To win money at Ironman Malaysia an athlete had to race pro, finish in the top 10 pros, and finish within 10% of the male or female winning time. Only two pro women finished the race, and both received prize money. Female Beate Kleindhurst was the fifth overall woman in a time of 10:49:08, but because she was the second pro she earned second place prize money of $6,606. Nine male pros earned prize money - the 10th male pro didn't make the 10% time cutoff. Because there were only two female and nine male money winners, there was an additional $11,400 in unclaimed prize money that was reallocated on a pro rata basis to the eleven prize money winners. This increased the prize money awarded to both winners, Bryan Rhodes and Danielle Florens, by $2,510**.

The 57 money winners from last weekend are shown below:
