Matthew Reed (NZ), who is currently living in Carlsbad, California, won the made-for television triathlon, Men's Fast Triathlon. With live television coverage, and over 4,000 spectators, this triathlon is showing the excitement of the sport in a major way. Beven Docherty (NZ) was 2nd, with Kris Gemmell (NZ) 3rd. New Zealand dominated the team competition, with points from each race being added together for a team tally.

Each race was a sprint format- 250m swim, 4 kilometer bike, and a 1 kilometer run.

Gemmell won the first race, with Reed 2nd and Docherty 3rd.  In the 2nd race, Reed and Docherty shared the win, however they gave the win to Docherty, with Gemmell finishing 4th. Going into the final race, Reed and Docherty were tied for the lead, with Gemmell only 2 points behind in 3rd. In the 3rd race Reed, who rode the entire bike solo and came home comfortably for the win with Docherty in 2nd and Gemmell in 4th again.

The USA team finished 4th in the team competition. Team USA was comprised of Victor Plata, Joe Umphenour, and Mark Fretta.

Reed, who was 3rd at the LA Triathon, 2nd in a sprint finish with Chris McCormack at Pacific Grove, is showing that he will be a force to be reckoned with this 2002 season. He will be doing some US bike racing early season and will return to Brazil to race Santos at the end of February.
