Powerman Alabama Sunday, March 24, 2002 Irondale, Alabama Powerman distance - 8k run, 55k bike, 8k run Whistlestop distance - 4k run, 28k bike, 4k run
Over 750 duathletes are set to race the new 8k/55k/8k Powerman Alabama distance on Sunday, with another 200+ athletes entered in the half distance Whistlestop Duathlon. The race always draws a strong age group field, and each age group will qualify four US athletes for the ITU short course World Championships in Alpharetta, Georgia, on October 19 and 20. In addition, the race will qualify two pro duathletes for the ITU long course World Championships at Powerman Austria in August.
Defending pro champion Huub Maas returns this year, but the favorite is Australian Jonathan Hall, winner of Dannon Florida two weeks ago. Greg Watson was second in Florida, and he will look to add a second championship to go with his 1996 win. Ryan Bolton will take his first crack at a duathlon and should contend for a top spot.
Laura Drake, last year's runner-up, is the top returning female. She will be challenged by Desiree Ficker, winner of Dannon Florida, plus Andrea Ratkovic, runner-up at Dannon Florida, and Marjan Huizing.
