Hamish Carter put aside the disappointments of the last 18 months to stamp his class on a top field to win the Oceania triathlon championship at Millbrook Resort near Queenstown today. After riding in the leading bunch on the 40km cycle, Carter pushed quickly into the lead on the 10km run around Millbrook Resort to win in 1:54.24. The Aucklander, ranked No 5 in the world, finished 40 seconds clear of Christchurch's Kris Gemmell won outsprinted fellow Kiwis Craig Watson and Shane Reed. Carter and Gemmell qualified for selection for the remaining two places to join Watson in the team for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Wellington's Heather Evans, now residing in Sydney, dominated the women's field to win in 2:11.37, and qualify for selection for the one spot available for women to join Wellington's Evelyn Williamson in the team for Manchester. Whangarei's Samantha Warriner finished 1min 10secs behind in second, with Australia's Rebecca Keat a further minute behind.
