Dave Scott & the 5430 Triathlon

Boulder, Colorado Six-time Hawaii Ironman champion Dave Scott, a longtime Boulder resident, is lending his support to the second annual 5430 Triathlon, set for Sunday, August 25th at Boulder Reservoir.

Scott is donating a week of free workouts with his Boulder-based Dave Scott Multisport Club as well as a free one-hour consultation with "The Man" to one lucky participant in the race. Scott's Multisport Club meets five days per week, with a typical week consisting of two swim sessions at Flatiron Athletic Club, two spinning classes or group rides, and a track workout. All race participants will automatically be entered to win the prize package, to be presented at the awards ceremony.

In addition, Scott will answer training questions that are submitted to the 5430 Website, www.5430tri.com, leading up to the race. "I am happy to help out a local race," said Scott, who also worked with race director Beth Spiegel to remap the bike course.

Spiegel added a half-distance to the event this year. Participants now have three choices: go the full distance (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run); the half distance (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run); or compete on a relay team in the full distance.

The bike course had been planned for an out-and-back course past the town of Masonville (full distance). The new bike course is a loop course. Participants in the full distance will do two loops of the bike course, with the half-distance racers doing one loop. The turnaround is just before Carter Lake northeast of Boulder (where aid station No. 3 was located last year.) "The course is fast, much more spectator friendly, and easier logistically," said Spiegel of the loop course.

"The biggest thing is that it will take racers back through the venue [Boulder Reservoir] and the start/finish area before they start out on the second loop," said Scott. "That will give the announcers a chance to call out the names of participants, which is ideal for spectators."

Last year, 450 people including 75 relay teams competed in the 5430 event, named for the highest elevation in Boulder.

Full distance
The 2.4-mile swim features two loops in Boulder Reservoir. The 112-mile bike is two loops of a course that goes northeast almost to Carter Lake and back. The 26.2-mile marathon consists of three loops on soft surfaces around the Reservoir. Relay teams of two, three and four persons are accepted in the full distance. Four-person relay teams will have one swimmer, one biker and two runners.

Half distance
The 1.2-mile swim features one loop in Boulder Reservoir. The 56-mile bike will be a one-loop course with the turnaround near Carter Lake. The 13.1-mile run will take place around Boulder Reservoir on soft surfaces.

The races benefit the ALS Association, the national not-for-profit health organization dedicated to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).
