Just over one week remains until Powerman Tennessee, the USAT National Long Course Championships. The top 8 finishers in each age group will qualify for the long course World Championships at Powerman Austria in August (click here for more on Powerman Austria), and the top four US male and female pros will also qualify for Austria. Each participant will also be eligible to race Powerman Zofingen in Switzerland on September 8.
The race takes place in the small town of College Grove, Tennessee, which is 20 miles southeast of Nashville. This is the second year of the race and it has been shortened to a 7.5k, 50k, 7.5k distance. Registration is open until Saturday, May 4. There is no race day registration. Clif Bar and Clif Shot are the official energy food and gel of the race, and one participant will receive a Softride frame in a post-race drawing.
Last year's winners, Edwige Pitel of France and Benny Vansteelant of Belgium, won't return to defend their titles. But last year's second place male, Henrik Svarre of Denmark, returns again this year. Svarre is one of the best Powerman distance athletes in the world, with a strong bike and strong second run. He will contend with top American Greg Watson and Australian Jonathan Hall for the overall title. Other non-US entrants include Brian Barkhouse of Canada, and South African Josephus Le Roux. Le Roux is also racing track and field for Western State University, and last weekend he ran a 3:57 1500m at the Mount Sac relays.
Three of the top six amateur women from last year turned pro and return this year: Rachel Sears, Heather Haviland, and Melissa Hopkins. Desiree Ficker will go for her fourth win in four duathlons this year. Other pro women include Lisa Bentley, who won Ironman Australia on April 7, and Anne Preisig.
