St. Anthony's Triathlon
Saturday, April 27, 2002
St. Petersburg, Florida
1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run - draft legal

The second event in the 2002 World Cup Series gets underway Saturday 27th April in the pleasant, tranquil, and warm beachside town of St. Petersburg, Florida. The first event was last week in far away Geelong in Australia, with victories by Loretta Harrop and Peter Robertson, both from the land down-under.

St. Pete's, named by a homesick migrant from the original, and somewhat colder, St. Petersburg, Russia, is home to St. Anthony's Hospital - the benevolent sponsor of the long standing Triathlon - organized by Steve Meckfessel, and his crew of doughty volunteers. The start list for the women, an impressive 60 from 18 countries, includes some clear favorites and Olympians: Michellie Jones, (AUS), Sheila Taormina (USA), Carol Montgomery (CAN), Joanna Zeiger (USA), and Akiko Sekine (JPN).

The men's field of 100 includes Andrew Johns (GBR), Greg Bennett (AUS), and the Kiwi trio of Bevan Docherty, Shane Reed, and Matt Reed, plus the Hispanic connection of Gilberto Gonzalez (VEN), Ivan Rana, Eneko Llanos, and Jose Maria Merchan from Iberia. From the USA Gentle Joe Umphenour has to make a breakthrough one of these days. Dark horses hiding in the bushes? How about Tim Don and Simon Lessing (GBR).

Next stop on the World Cup series is the Island of Ishigaki, Okinawa Region of Japan 19th of May.
