Wildflower Long Course Triathlon
Saturday, May 4, 2002
Lake San Antonio, California
1.2m swim, 56m bike, 13.1m run

One of the largest triathlons in the world kicks off on Saturday, with the Wildflower Long Course Triathlon. A mountain bike triathlon follows the long course race, and on Sunday the Olympic distance race takes place.

Nearly 100 pros will race for $40,000 in the long course event. Seven of the top 10 men from 2002 return, including the top four men: Chris McCormack, Craig Walton, Chris Legh and Steve Larsen. The challengers include Jurgen Zack, Cam Brown, and Cam Widoff.

Two of the would be contenders pulled out of the race this week - one intentionally, and one unintentionally. Conrad Stoltz was making the trip from South Africa to the US. When he flew into Atlanta there were problems with his visa, and he was not allowed to enter the country, and he had to return to South Africa. Peter Reid told Wildflower officials that he wasn't ready to race. He will be there, but not as a participant.

Last year's second place woman, Becky Gibbs, is the top returning woman. Seven of the top 10 women from 2001 are back in 2002. Gibbs will battle Heather Fuhr, Lori Bowden, Gina Kehr, Beth Zinkand, Wendy Ingraham, and others.

A 1.2m swim, 56m bike, 13.1m run. This is a really short race!!! The transition times are going to be longer than each of the splits. No wonder so many pros are doing this race. It is of my opinion that they just round each of the distances off. I mean who wants to swim an extra .2 meters and run an extra .1 meters. Maybe the race director thinks this will make the race more competitive. You got me.

it is a 1/2 Ironman Reply

it is a 1/2 Ironman, take the distances of Wildflower and multiply by 2 and You get the same distance as Hawaii
