PEOPLE.
Please. If you want to be critical and call people headcases etc then at least have the balls to put your name to it. This habbit of slagging people and signing anomynous is weak as. It reminds me of throwing stones from a safe distance.
Get over it.

Taking nothing away from Reid, he is a great athlete, but it's time to step up to the plate. For over a year now, he has more DNF's than finishes. Then he talks of retirement. He is pulling out due to a slight illness... It's time to compete and finish...

Over my last 15 years of coaching high performance athletes the common pattern is for athletes to have cycles of high performance followed by tough stretches for various reasons. I don't know Van Lierde, but I can tell you Reid has legitimate health concerns currently, and that he will be back to his previous form in the future.

Athletes at that level have a lot of pressure from various sources to commit to races, and sometimes have to when their health status is questionable. Of course the event gets excited and pumps up the fact they are going to be there. Then it becomes a major story when they withdraw.

I can also say that when they read negative comments publically about themselves it cuts them deep, it pours salt in the wound.

Well said Lance. I am sure there is a medical reason for his withdrawal but even if it was due to pressure to perform etc or bad training block, you(person who made initial comment) have a lot of nerve. First and foremost, Peter is a (super)human being just like the rest of us. I am sure you would not like it if someone make rude comments for everyone to see. If he is going thru a bad spot in his training it can obviously affect his mind. What he needs now is support, not nasty comments. I may also be able to relate to his situation cause even though I "only" race as age-grouper duathlete, I have put a lot of pressure on myself in the past to perform and it affected my results and enjoyment of the sport but I have a fulltime job. Imagine what Peter is going thru this being his career. He probably does feel immense pressure. Constructive criticism or opinions are great as we all can learn from it but to make a personal attack on someone you really don't know is not appropriate and is certainly disrespectful.
I wish you well Peter in your recovery and upcoming season.
PS: Lance, I saw your wife Lucy kick ass in Ottawa during the National Cap. Marathon weekend. She placed maybe 5th in the 10k and was one second away from winning the half marathon. She rocks.:)
Take care.

Reid and Van Lierde withdraw from ANOTHER race?? Legitimate medical reasons??....Pressure??.... Mr. Reid and Mr. Van Lierde our IMMORTALS in this sport, so why are you being bitch-slapped by MORTAL problems. Come on dudes...."don't sit on your boards and wait for the ocean to send you a wake, paddle out and create your own!"...coaches and doctors give you opinions, but your heart well tell you the truth.
