Two thousand triathletes are entered for the first California Half Ironman, which replaces Ironman California. The Oceanside race offers 20 slots for Ironman Hawaii and an additional 125 slots for other Ironman North America events.

Pros will race for $25,000 in prize money. This will be the first race of 2002 for Ironman Hawaii champion Tim DeBoom. The pro field is listed below.
