MIM is and has always been a great race. Great course, great competition, great food! However I would like to offer some criticism of this year’s race. 1, the transition area was not controlled well. There were multiple places to come and go as you please and many people, i.e. friends and family, were doing so. There was also no checking of bikes with bib numbers as you left. One could have easily left with any bike they chose. The second complaint is about the Team-In-Training participants. I have no problem with them being there and I am in fact glad that they are there. However with this race being a time-trial start and 1400 participants if you are really racing and because you are number 1000+ you are fighting your way past hundreds of people who are just there to complete and not compete. The bike course was changed this year and now has 27 or so turns. So many times I would have to break and almost stop because there were 2 TNTers out for a Sunday ride and going through the turn together or taking turns way wide. Again, I welcome them there but in that format… but them in the back. If you have wave starts… put them in the back. I believe this would make the race safer and make it more enjoyable for all.

Ditto to the previous message about absence of controls for the transition area. In addition, the race announcer did a great job of notifying the athletes as to progression of race numbers as the athletes entered the water, giving all ample warning to line up. As I approached waters edge, several athletes ran up, out of order, some 20-30 places late and were allowed to go ahead of me, The time keepers asked each other, "Where are we?" (in the line-up).Other time trial format races I have done have rightly so DQ'd athletes who were too busy to keep track of their chronological order at the start.I recommend that MIM do the same. I attribute the lax policies about these issues to the great Southern hospitality we enjoyed at the race, but sometimes tough love is the answer for the greater good.

I think a DQ is a nuclear bomb sort of solution. Simply make them wait until everyone else has gone off and add a couple minutes to their time.....OR simply start their time when they should have gone as they do in races such as the Tour de France.....I seem to remember Greg LeMond missed his start time in a prologue time trail once, so it could happen to any of us.

I know that I drove 6-7 hours to get there and would have been really mad if someone had said "Sorry you're 2 minutes too late".

Tough love, not war. Rules is rules. Drafting, chin strap, bar ends, etc. I drove 8 hours, in addition to the training and other planning involved in being at the starting line, being in the line-up chronologically is not an unrealistic expectation. In fact, I found that part to be the easiest of all!
