The Buffalo Trails Duathlon was held on May 25 in the historic district of Maysville, Kentucky and surrounding countryside along the Ohio River.  The sanctioned race consisted of a 2 mile run, 22-mile bike and 2 mile run.  The bike course was smooth and clean but was tough on riders with the numerous hills including the famed Big Hiney Hill which is .9 mile long and has a 7.6% grade.  A top racer described the hill as being tougher than any of the hills at Powerman Alabama or Powerman Tennessee and was like Energizer Batteries, It just keeps going and going.  The top overall racer was Jonathan Hastings of Grove City, Ohio.  He set new course records for Run 1
(12:08), Bike (54:43) and overall (1:20:38) all of which earned him $50 each in prize money.  The top female racer (7th overall) was Michelle Kitze of Kettering, Ohio.  She posted new split records for Run 1 (13:51), bike (1:1:45) and overall (1:32:04).

The top 5 males included #2 Andrew Eschbach of Columbus, Ohio (1:25:35), #3 Justin Caskey of Phoenix, Arizona (1:29:14), #4 Mike Tigani of Cincinnati, Ohio (1:30:44) and #5 Craig Thompson of Lewis Center, Ohio (1:31:07).

The top 5 females included #2 Darcie Jarman of Versailles, Kentucky (1:45:35), #3 Amy Smith of Nicholasville, Kentucky (1:45:57), #4 Lori Tigani of Cincinnati, Ohio (1:46:05) and #5 Jennifer Gibson of Cincinnati, Ohio (1:47:27).

Cash prizes were given to the top 3 male and female racers and for record setting split times.   Medals and a certificate were given to every Big Hiney survivor as well.  The race received many great reviews.  To see complete race results visit www.maysvillekentucky.com

Mark - Thanks for the great race! I can sincerely say this is one of the best races I have ever participated. The hospitality & courteousness demonstrated by yourself, the race volunteers, and the City of Maysville was truly overwhelming. I will make certain that this race is on my calendar for next year. And I'll make certain to stop in for a visit during any of my travels in the area.

The "Big Hiney" - what can I say? It was by far the toughest hill (or should I say mountain?) that I've experienced. I raced in Powerman Alabama and Powerman Tennessee this year which are reknowned for their hilly bike courses but any hill that they offered was dimunitive next to the "Big Hiney". In fact, when I SLOWLY ascended the Big Hiney during the race a number of new names came to mind for it all of which would have caused a truck driver to blush! Seriously, the challenge of climbing it was an enormous thrill.

Congratulations to Jon Hastings & Michelle Kitze for the overall victory and establishing a new course records! Also, great race by Drew Eschbach whose splits also surpassed last year's records.

Thanks again for the great race experience!

Mark,
Thanks for an awesome race. I really loved the course - challenging, but scenic and fast (especially the run). This is for sure one of the best races I have done in a while. Great volunteers, spectators along the entire course (that is rare), well maintained roads, and a nice post race spread. I will be back next year!

There is a 5 minute spread between the top 3 males. Didn't you guys get lonely?

Next year's race will be scheduled on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend at 8am. More information can be learned about the area by going to duathlon.com homepage and clicking on the results for Buffalo Trails Duathlon. This will give you a picture of the top of Big Hiney Hill, complete results, more comments, and the home website of the race and chamber of commerce. The race is becoming an event. As a race director I am not completely satisfied with everything yet but it is coming and we do offer things few races can. Just to name a few - media coverage which someone was nice enough to point out, awesome course with spectators, very nice race hotel located at transition area with another 300+ hotel rooms within 5 miles and most importantly a great support staff from the volunteers to radio folks to the Gold WIng club. We had no intentions of competing with HFP on the calander but their race was not on a calander when we chose our weekend. They do a nice job of putting on races (I have done several of them) but I think we are a little different because we are more community based. Next year I have been assured that we will have play by play coverage of the race for the racer's family to listen to and the many folks that can't travel to the area. In the next few weeks we will be making a movie of the highlights of the course and putting it on our website for racers to view and perhaps train by. Without good local support that would not happen and multisport racing would be an unknown even more. . I hope many people will consider doing the race next year. Be sure to visit our website and duathlon.com for updates.

I think a race course video sounds cool. Is the run course 2 miles? The run times look slower then one would think for a 2 miler.

I think the run is around 2.3 miles w/a steady but not hard climb the first mile. From there it is flat until finish.
