Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon
Lubbock, Texas
Sunday, June 30, 2002
1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run

James Bonney set a new course record in Lubbock, breaking the old record by more 94 seconds. The conditions weren't quite as hot and windy at Buffalo Springs, and Bonney took advantage, beating the nearest pro man by over 30 minutes.

Australian Chris Legh was in second when he crashed descending the spiral staircase, the trickiest descent on the course. Legh was in second at the time. Defending champion Michael Lovato was in third, and he crashed in the same spot that Legh did. A patch of oil on the road is believed to be the culprit. Legh flatted when he crashed, but he was able to continue until he flatted again. Lovato suffered significant road rash, but he continued and was able to finish the race, although more than 3 hours slower than normal.

Judith McSweeney was the fastest pro woman, beating second place pro Eva Mathuta by 15 minutes. Paula Newby-Fraser was expected at the race, however a mountain biking injury prevented her from making the trip.

Below are unofficial results of the pro finishers.

Congrats to Mike Lovato for finishing the race. I'm sure he was in pain but was still motivated to finish despite being out of the awards. I hope he has a speedy recovery and is able to race again soon.

Hats off to Lovato for sticking it out on Sunday after his crash - I saw him limpinG his way through the run and IT was pretty inspiring. The guy has posted some excellent results in the past and is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

But whats with deal those other clowns posing as "pros" and finishing over 30 minutes behind Bonney?? Thats over 30 min on a Goddamn 1/2 IM folks?! It doesn't even look like they cracked the top 10 and even got their a$$e$ kicked by the masters male. Hey guys, you might want to think about racing as AG's next time! You need to walk before you can run - and judging by some of the splits it looks like you definitely CANNOT run! Thanks for comin' out.
