Dannon Carlsbad Duathlon/US Pro Championships Carlsbad, California Sunday, July 15, 2002 10k run, 40k bike, 5k run - draft legal for pros Complete Start List
The US Pro Championships take place Sunday in Carlsbad, alongside the US Age Group Championships. This will be just the second draft legal US Pro Championships, and the first since 1999. It is also the first draft legal US race contested at the 10k/40k/5k distances, the same distance to be used at the World Championships in Alpharetta in October.
Due to the hilly nature of the race, the draft legal bike leg could be a tactical affair. The two loop bike course contains several lengthy hills, which might allow the stronger cyclists to get away.
Greg Watson, the most dominant and consistent US Pro over the last five years, will go for his third straight title. Several strong runners, such as Travis Kuhl, Christopher Georgules, Josephus LeRoux, and Chris Tolonen, will make Watson's task difficult.
The top two women from 2001, Canadians Lucy Smith and Heather Fuhr, will challenge the top Americans for the overall title. The US Pro Championships are open to both US and non-US competitors. The top American women include Andrea Ratkovic (2001 Pro Champion), Marjan Huizing (2000 Pro Champion), and Desiree Ficker. Ficker was the top US duathlete earlier this year, but an injury to her calf sidelined her for several weeks. This will be her first duathlon since her injury forced her to stop running.
Participation in the US Pro Duathlon Championships has grown over the last several years. In 1997 USAT did not hold a US Championship, but in each year since the numbers have increased, and in 2001 a total of 28 men and 18 women started the race. This year's entry list, which will be larger by race day, is shown below.
The US men and women will be racing for the last two slots on the US team for the Duathlon World Championships. Four of the six men's and women's slots were previously awarded at the Dannon Alpharetta Duathlon.

Andrea Ratkovic is uncertain if she will be able to compete in Carlsbad because she was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever just over a week ago after developing very high fevers and a rash. In addition, she also had a very severe case of poison ivy. She's been on antibiotics since she was diagnosed. She missed 3 weeks of training and has been very ill; although, she informs me that she most likely will race in Carlsbad.
