USAT National Duathlon Championships Dannon Carlsbad Duathlon Carlsbad, California Sunday, July 15, 2002 Complete Results
Approximately 500 age group athletes lined up for the 2002 Duathlon National Championships, making it one of the largest US Duathlon National Championships ever. Each age group had a minimum of 6 slots available for the short course World Championships in Alpharetta, Georgia on October 19. The weather was moderately warm with little wind. The hills, which started on the last mile of the first run, and continued throughout the two loop bike, challenged everyone.
The top age group male finisher, Josh Beck, is new to the sport this year. Beck is a Category 1 cyclist from Pennsylvania who did minimal running in preparation for this race. Beck had previously finished 7th at the Blackwater Traverse Duathlon before his breakthrough victory in Carlsbad. After an opening 10k of 33:42, Beck covered the 40k bike course in exactly one hour. His closest competition came from Andy Biglow, who is in just his second year of racing. Biglow, who had unsuccessfully petitioned USAT for a pro license before this race, opened with a 32:20 10k, but lost time to Beck on the bike with a still impressive 1:03:54 bike split.
The women's race went to Chris Farias, who won the Mt. Rainer Duathlon earlier this year. Farias narrowly edged Cecily Tynan by 32 seconds. Farias came from behind, covering the final 5k 49 seconds faster than Tynan. Sue Davis, age 40 and a former pro, was the top masters woman and third place overall. Davis had the fastest time of all the age group women after the bike, but a 21:54 final 5k dropped her to third. Melissa Ruthven, another former pro and now a mother of two, was fourth.
Only three of the top 15 men from 2001 made the top 15 this year - Michael Olson, Edmond Hickey, and Christopher McHugh. (8th in 2001, 12th in 2002). Five of the top 15 from last year have since turned pro - Christopher Georgule, Jay Cech, Erik Scott, John Phillips, and Erik Prince. The women's top 15 was also completely different than last year. Only two of last year's top women turned pro - Heather Haviland and Rachel Sears.
As in all World Championship qualifying races this year, athletes race in the age group they would be in on December 31, 2002. The ITU uses the same format for the World Championships, which is why USA Triathlon made the switch.
Three of the Masters men finished in the top 16 this year - Dana Lyons (9th), Mike Plumb (10th), and David Walters (16th). The top six Masters women all finished in the top 15 overall - Sue Davis (3), Sandy Meister (6th), Anne Ellacott (7th), Linda Jannelli (10th), Cheryl Sheremeta (5th), and Kathleen Kaye (15th).
The end of the race was a sad time as 74 year old Wes Coyner died just before the finish line. Medical personnel attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. Coyner, who had competed in several Dannon Duathlons, is last year's 70-74 National Champion, and his race number will be retired from all future Dannon Duathlon events.

Where was John Phillips, aka Allez John, aka The Mouth of the South and the rest of the Georgia chain gang (that means you Wes)? Seems like he (they) could have placed well in the 20-24 age group, based on past performance. Check out the 2001 results.

In addition to being a newlywed and an all-round great guy, National Champion Josh Beck is the now the Twirly Top Time Trial course record holder. Josh stunned the field with a non-aero 22:51 clocking on the 10-mile course (located just north of Gettysburg, PA).

I looks like Michael Olson and Ed Hickey also had great races both years. It was amazing how few people were able to defend their titles this year.

Sometimes I think I must be drunk when I write these articles, how else could I explain missing those two guys?
