Powerman Austria/Duathlon World Championships Weyer, Austria Sunday, August 18, 2002 14k run, 76k bike, 7k run
Huub Maas played it conservatively on the first half of the race and took the lead on the second part of the bike, winning his first World Championship. Huubs performance was noted by the queen of the Netherlands, as he received a fax from her congratulating him on his win. Jon Hall was with the leaders coming off the bike but suffered on the final run and was reduced to walking. Karin Thurig defended her world title with a dominating bike. She took the lead from Edwige Pitel, who was suffering, at 55k on the bike. The American women took 5, 6, and 7, place to win the team title.
The weather was warm and humid at the start, but a thunderstorm poured rain during most of the bike before letting up late in the race.

Congratulations to Huub! If Dereere would have cut his hair before the race, it would have been a closer race! I noticed that the extra 10 gram made the difference on the last climb.

jose was the 50-54 race champion but if you notice he and the second place guy ran and rode the entire race together. I think he got some help. I rode the entire race without any help and it taints his victory to me. I am not in his age group so it is no sour grapes, just facts.

Does anyone know where the Canadian team was? Why did they not have anyone there, they usually have a huge team?

Yes, Jose had a great race- one which he should be congratulated for. I thought I was really having a good race under adverse conditions (ended up 7th) but was stunned when he told me what his time was. Truly an epic effort.
