U.S. pro triathlete Tim DeBoom (Lyons, Colo.) overcame freakish weather conditions and a challenge from Canadian Peter Reid to win the Ironman World Championship for the second straight year, on Saturday in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. DeBoom, 31, completed the 2.5-mile swim, 114-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 8 hours, 29 minutes, 56 seconds. The finish was faster than his 2001 winning time of 8:31:18. Reid, who challenged DeBoom on the run, finished second in 8:33:06 and Cameron Brown of New Zealand was third in 8:35:34.
Natascha Badmann of Switzerland, the 2001 women's Ironman winner, also repeated as the world champion, completing the race in 9:07:54. Nina Kraft of Germany was second (9:14:24) and Lori Bowden of Canada was third (9:22:27).

Swim times look pretty slow. And here is a question, would anyone else like to see these guys actually contest the bike. I mean it's 112 miles, and look at those bike splits. Maybe Larson would have ran away with it this year.

Ffofnoone,
I doubted Larson would have. I am sure as hell someone on the German Juggernaut would have stuck with him on the bike. Maybe not Leder and Stadler, since both of them are all Ironmaned out from this year, but probably Hellriegel and/or Zack.

Pitty that Marc Herremans 5belgium) was ill by an infection of the blatter just one day before the contest. He did the swim with fever in his body but it was impossible for him to continue. Next year hopenly more luck for Marc. Beiing there this year was already a victory for Marc, finishing next year will be the next step...............
Visit his Website http://www.marcherremans.be and send him a mail

In response to the comment by ftofnoone (i think i know who you are - 2nd at Wendy's Tri?), I would also like to see somebody go out and really throw it down on the bike ride, the lead guys know who is strong and who has a descent shot at winning and they race within a few minutes of each other the whole way - i agree, Larsen is certainly a person who can rip this race apart and win (provided that next year he can be healthy and his body can accept run training), he tore it apart last year. - Thank you for the post about Marc Herremans, I was wondering why I couldn't find much about his race.

I wasn't there, but as I understand it Zack, Helreigel, and McCormack did go off the front on the bike. Here is where the conspiracy theories start: Apparently there was a draft marshal with those 3 guys, but no draft marshals with the chase pack for a large portion of the bike. The saying "there is no honor among thieves" also applies to pro triathletes as far as drafting is concerned.
As you probably know, Zack and McCormack both dropped out of the race in the early stages of the run, and Helreigel faded.

I would hardly say Hellriegel faded. He tried to win, but Deboom, and Reid are better runners and he could not hold them off.
also, Peter Reid is BACK!!!!!!!!

Was the swim long? Also, Eric said the bike
was 114 miles? Is this an error?

Swim times were slow due to the water conditions, 3-4 foot swells the further out you got. There was a strong current pulling you out to sea as you returned to the pier.
My bike did register 114 miles and I heard others mention 115 miles on their computer. What's up with no aid station for 3.5 miles after bike transition??

I was at the race, the bay was rolling quite a bit, probably the reason for the slower swim times. You should have seen the bay earlier in the week, totally brutal. The 3 German's and McCormack did challenge the bike, and paid for it later. The conditions were tough. Kona's humidity was off the charts that week, and the top 3 ran an amazing race, pacing it perfect for the conditions, and it paid off. The win was well deserved.

Maybe if Stadler, Zack and McCormack didn't race evertime they train like the Saturday Swamis ride in SD or a 5K race on the track after. Or even 3 days before the damn race in Hawaii on the bike. When will these guys learn it doesn't matter who the hell wins the swim, bike or run! But, the entire race! DeBoom did it the old way just like when Mark Allen won all his. Raced his own race, even if he was 10+ minutes down. And won again and again. I wouldn't be surprised if Deboom wins another 5 after this. He's the smartest Ironman Triathlete in the world and he'll prove it year after year.
Stadler, Zack and McCormack pull your heads out of your assses!

How the hell can anyone say Larsen would have run away with it? What has he done since winning Lake Placid a year and a half ago? That boy gets way more credit than he deserves. Anonymous is right, Hawaii is won by being smart, calculated and paying your dues. Of course I'm a bit biased since Tim's my husband, but hey, I've seen it all over there, and the men's race hasn't been won on the bike for a long time. Maybe it will again someday, but for now you can't go and hammer the bike and expect the Queen K to be forgiving on the run. People like Tim are just too strong all the way around. Wise up.
By the way, when's the last time someone won the race who went into it announcing that they would win? Never.

Yeah...you're right! After being at the race, it was clear that everyone in the first group would fold, and the second group would persevere.
It is crazy how all of these athletes are willing to put in the time and effort all year long, only to travel to Kona to throw it all away! A lot of talent was wasted last Saturaday in Kona.
