Sweet Tomatoes Desert Classic Duathlon
Sunday, February 23, 2003. Phoenix, Arizona
3.5m trail run, 21m road bike, 2.7m trail run
$4,000 purse
Results (posted late Mon/early Tues) at www.phoenixtriathlonclub.org.

After a 13th place finish at Ironman Hawaii, Tim Luchinske had a solid winter of training and it showed as he defended his title in Arizona. Armand van der Smissen had a small lead on Luchinske after the first run, but Luchinske hopped on the bike and went all out and built a comfortable lead going into the final run. “I was surprised to come into the first transition only a few seconds behind Armand.” Armand raced strong to finish second, nearly two minutes in front of third place Lewis Elliot.

Armand came into this race a little bit behind schedule because of a back injury. “Until the beginning of January I couldn't train because of back problems. I did some cyclocross training and built up my running a little. I am a couple of months late. But Tim was very good today. If I was fit it would still be very hard to race as fast as Tim.” Former winner Michael Tobin finished fourth.

Desiree Ficker was an easy winner in the women's race, finishing 3:31 in front of Jeanne Ann Krizman. Ficker's closest competition would have come from Andrea Ratkovic, but Ratkovic pulled out earlier in the week with an illness. Ficker ran well, but said she felt rusty on the bike. Krizman was a little faster on all three legs than third place Sue Davis. Jenny Tobin finished fourth.

Great race to all the pro-elites. We were delighted to have you here. Thanks also to all the people racing and supporting the event year after year. There is a great deal of love and inspiration that goes into this race and if it wasn't for all of you this event would not exist. For complete results see www.phoenixtriathlonclub.org

Congrats to all finishers! To come from a snow ridden east coast and race in the sunshine amongst the cacti-amazing! The course was completely unique and the organization-top notch. Thanks Kristy and Marc, not only for the race but for kicking me around out on the trails the next day. Thanks also for setting me up with my most wonderful homestay family- Tina and Brian. See you next year!

Indeed the Sweet Tomatoes Desert Classic Duathlon is a great race. We don't have such a nice courses in our country. Good job for all the finishers but especially for Kristie and Mark and all other volunteers who have had a lot of work with it and don't forget the race collects money for good purposes. Most participaters will like it to come back and if I can I will do for the nice course but also to challenge Tim who beated me without giving me a change....(that was not the deal Tim)
