MINNEAPOLIS (March 4, 2003) - At a press conference held in Minneapolis today, Life Time Fitness officials, along with Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Minneapolis Mayor, RT Rybak, and other special guests, announced the 2003 Life Time Fitness Triathlon record-setting prize purse and network television coverage details.

To be held Saturday, August 2, 2003, the Event will offer the largest prize purse in the history of triathlon - $500,000. Of this amount, the top five finishers will receive prize awards as follows: First Place - $250,000, Second Place - $50,000, Third Place - $35,000, Fourth Place - $25,000, and Fifth Place - $20,000. Cash will be awarded to the overall top 12 professional women and top 12 professional men.

Furthermore, the 2003 Triathlon will be broadcast same-day nationally on NBC Sports from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (central) in keeping with Life Time Fitness' commitment to heighten the profile of and participation in the sport of triathlon.

The 2003 Triathlon will feature, “The Equalizer,” a unique timing structure that allows professional women and men to compete on equal ground. Based on past Life Time Fitness Triathlon course results, as well as the outcomes from a number of world and American international-distance events, The Equalizer allows pro women to start ahead of pro men by a predetermined amount of time, resulting in a new and innovative competition format, and a dramatic “battle-of-the-sexes” race to the finish.

Professional triathletes Becky Gibbs Lavelle, a Minnesota native, and Craig Walton of Australia - the second- and third-place finishers respectively in last year's Life Time Fitness Triathlon - also attended today's press conference, offering commentary on their experience in the 2002 Event and plans for participation this year.

“The 2002 Life Time Fitness Triathlon set a new benchmark for the sport of triathlon,” said Bahram Akradi, founder and CEO, Life Time Fitness, Inc. “In 2003, we're raising the bar by both increasing our prize purse to historic levels and presenting this year's event to a large national viewing audience on NBC Sports. At the same time, our unique “battle of the sexes” timing format brings intense excitement and drama unparalleled in other sporting events of its kind.”

The 2003 Life Time Fitness Triathlon will feature a stunning course, beginning and ending at Minneapolis' Lake Nokomis and covering a 27-mile path within the City's beautiful Parkway system

. Both short- and international-distance courses will be offered. The short-distance course includes a .4-mile swim, 10-mile bike race and a 2.1-mile run. The international-distance course features a .75-mile swim, 21.3-mile bike race and 4.7-mile run.

The Event also is a part of the Minneapolis Aquatennial, a ten-day premier Twin Cities civic celebration that upholds a 63-year community tradition and hosts more than 800,000 visitors.

With hundreds of participants already registered, Life Time Fitness Triathlon organizers expect a full field, including 2,000+ of the world's top professional and amateur triathletes from 15 countries and more than 35 states. These are professionals, and this is their job. They represent the best in the world and really, this should be applauded for, final Triathlon and Lifetime Fitness step up to the next level. This company is the cutting edge of a growing sport. Golfers, Tennis players, Baseball, Pool, even bowling, have been earning more than the top game triathletes. Thank you Lifetime Fitness for supporting triathlon. The Professionals thank you for the opportunity and the age groupers thank you as this takes their sport to a new level.

Finally there is somebody who sees how much the PRO triathletes have to work and is giving them a chance to earn some living. Thanks LTF. Now we need somebody independent to organize an ironman distance race with the same $$$, and why not in October!

greg-what the hell are you thinking give money to age-groupers? The pros will be the ones people will be watching on tv, not the slow-ass age-groupers who look like they are jogging. No offence to age-groupers, but now that the $$ is where it should be, you age-groupers should keep your lips tight about wanting some of that money these guys and gals who have dedicated their lives to this sport have been praying for.
Awesome News!!!!Right on!!!!

Yeah, give it to the pros. Flipping burgers don't pay that well. The Euros will be over which mean US guys won't get squat.
LTF has brought triathlon to the level of one hour decathlon and the Superstars series. Welcome to the freak and geek shows.

What I was saying is give the pros the $500,000 and what about awarding the age group winners $4,995. I don't understand why you would have a problem with that.

Don't turn this into another ridiculous pro vs age group argument. This is a great thing for the sport, and the pros are excited about it. If you check the website I think you will see their is $3,000 for an elite age group wave.

Putting money in the age group race is like saying lets give the 38th pro an extra $3000. If we want to race pro we all have the chance to do the races, earn a pro card, and race for the cash. Nothing is keeping age groupers from racing pro, you just have to meet the requirements, just like all the pros had to do at one time.

Lifetime fitness is the best thing that has ever happened to the sport of triathlon. This kind of a move will bring the sport into mainstream recognition, because in the USA money legitimizes sport. And, all in all, this kind of a move will serve to benefit the sport on the whole, age group or pro. I would love to see more of this.

Jimmy

the other anon has it rite. if the sport has to resort to handicap races to make it interesting we're in trouble. why not just have the guys carry a 50 lb weight while competing or make them have to race in a clown suit. if the sport can't promote itself based on real competition, then the 500K is turning our sport into a side show. and you're all falling for it.

Will other regular people watch the show besides triathletes? The last Ironman show we went to see at the local Chi'Chi's restaurant was turned off because half the bar shouted down the 15+ triathletes that went there to watch it. We wound up having to watch NASCAR.

Are there any statistics on the level of interest in triathlon (globally or even just the US)?

I'm relatively knew to the sport, but it often baffles me how difficult it is to find a good sports article (coverage) on even the Hawaiian Ironman winner the day after the race. I'm bias, but it feels like triathlon has grown tremendously in the past few years and deserves more coverage than it receives. I hate to admit the fact that its probably the lack of $$ that goes with a win. I mean until there is some real $$ thrown at an event like Hawaii, I would suspect I will continue to surf the local tri sites looking for any significant coverage of a major event instead of just picking up a national news paper and finding it on the front page (where it should be). Triathlon is exciting and the Sydney Olympics demonstrated tri is probably one of the most followed events of the Olympics.

Point: If we want the sport to grow and become more main stream, we should more than support big purses of $500,000 going to the pro's. Hell, give it all to the winner if it gets more interest in the sport.....this will eventually lead to bigger purses across the board.
With so much money up for grads in international bowling and pool events I fail to see why tri can't at least match those kind of $$ - there is enough public interest isn't there?.

Apologies for the length.

With the economy the way it is, it looks as if the BIG races are filling up, but many of the local races the numbers are hurting. Here in the mid south area, the old standby's aren't having the participating prerace sign up level as in the past - at least according to the local racedirectors. If these races fold up will there be any place for first timers to race or people that don't want to spend $125 to enter an event. I think we're biting the hand that feeds us.

Sorry to say, that a majority of Americans don't really care about Triathlon. Many are consumed with Football or Baseball. Ridiculous, I know, but reality is people most (American) people can care less about the sport pf Triathlon!

Majority rules... if we can't get the public interested in participating in the sport, let alone watching the sport, reading about the sport, or following the sport, sponsors will not make the effort to fund a race let alone an athlete.

Now, if Tiger Woods would have a go at a triathlon.....
betcha things would change!

There are lots of small time golf, baseball, basketball etc events to play in despite the big $$ in the pro's. Not eveyone can play in the Masters so I'm not sure why its a problem to have a number of large "expensive" races in triathlon. There will be lots of local races to go in....they just might not have the prestigue (or prize money) that some of the others do, which you wouldn't expect in the first place.

To get the sport more popular it has to be seen.....which means TV, which means $$. We need races with the big purses even if it means the average joe can't get in them.....average joe also can't sign up for the World series, but he still likes to watch it on TV.
