Dannon Duathlon Florida Grenelefe, Florida Sunday, March 16, 2003 5k run, 30k bike, 5k run
The Dannon Duathlon Series begins its tenth year Sunday in Florida, returning to the Grenelefe Resort. A bankruptcy filing by the Resort during the week of last year's event forced a last minute change to the Haines City High School.
Australian Jonathan Hall ended Benny Vansteelant's two year winning streak at last year's event, and he returns this year to defend his title. His toughest challenge should come from US Champion Greg Watson and Britain's Martin Yelling.
Two-time Olympian Sheila Taormina, who is training in Florida until early May, makes her duathlon debut on Sunday. She will face Desiree Ficker, winner of the season opening Sweet Tomatoes Desert Classic Duathlon two weeks ago. Vicky Pincombe, last year's third place finisher, also made the trip over from Great Britain. After a successful 2002 season, Philadelphia TV meteorologist Cecily Tynan (website) has moved up to the pro ranks and she will make her debut on Sunday.
Pro Men Travis Kuhl, Greg Watson, Jonathan Hall (AUS), Martin Yelling (GBR), Ric Rosenkranz, Hank Campbell, Darin Shearer
Pro Women Desiree Ficker, Vicky Pincombe (GBR), Shelia Taormina, Cecily Tynan, Deanna Frank, Heather Butcher, Amy Farrell

Darin Shearer is a pro duathlete now?!
He's the new "fastest runner in Duathlon".
3:58 mile
8:23 steeple
13:48 5000
Good luck Darin!

If Darin is indeed that fast it will be no contest.

I have no doubt that Darin will beat Watson. As Travis and Sam have learned, you go out hard on the first run because you will need a 30 sec + lead on Watson at the start of the bike and a strong second run will finish him off. The strong runners need to not hold back, they have two opportunities to stick it to Watson and they must take advantage of them both.

Darin did indeed run for Harvard, but ran his best times post graduation in 1998, 1999.
He is certainly not in 13:48 shape anymore, but if he is in only 14:48 shape that is fast enough to do some damage in a Duathlon.
I wouldnt say he is by any means a lock to beat Watson, Hall, etc. I have no idea if he has been doing much biking, and you cant fake it on a non-drafting course.
Cant wait to race him either way!
The runner with the best track credentials in Duathlon is probably Marcel Laros of Holland. He ran 8:20's in the steeple, and 3:39 or so for the 1500.

Running is only 1/2 the equation. If you are running sub 15 then you are going to bike 60 min. 40K. The best you can hope for is to keep Watson from getting 5 minutes on you on the bike. Watson will win easy.

You mean Watson will win easy like last year at Dannon Florida? Or like at Powerman Alabama?

All anyone ever does is talk about times! Times on paper never win races, if that was the case. we could all sit at the comp. and e-mail all of our best track times in to Eric. He could then project the winner and Bill could just sent us all checks. That would be nice and easy. I DONT CARE HOW FAST PEOPLE WERE. ITS ALL ABOUT RACE DAY!

I hear that the key to winning the pro race at Greenlefe is to sucker some other guy to ride out of site behind you on the same side of the road that you are on. That will be called drafting and he will hae to get off of his bike. This is obviously a thinking man's sport!

Yeah... Every year it's "so and so" who will dust everyone. All i can say is that people keep talking but Greg keeps winning. He is the quiet assassin. oh yeah... see everyone tomorrow.
