Belgium Sprint Duathlon Dilbeek, Belgium March 20, 2003 5k run, 18k bike, 2.5k run
In sunny conditions the first duathlon of the Belgium season took place in Dilbeek. It was organized by Loic Helin, an age group world champion last year in Weyer, Austria. There were about 30 participants in this midweek race for students. The running consisted of 2 laps of 2.5km, then 3 laps cycling of technical cycling, and a one lap final run.
In the first run Dutchman and part-time-student Armand van der Smissen took the lead and stayed in front until the end. Joeri van Steelant and Pieter Helin (brother of Louis, last year second in Powerman Luxemburg) battled for second, with Joeri prevailing by 12 seconds. In the women's race it was Marieke Peeters who beat Dina Vercruyssen with almost 4 minutes.
