Buffalo Trails Duathlon
Maysville, Kentucky
May 24, 2003
2 mile run, 22 mile bike, 2 mile run

The Maysville-Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in the Buffalo Trails Duathlon in beautiful Maysville, Kentucky on May 24 at 8am. In only its third year this USAT sanctioned event has attracted racers from 11 states and Canada and has been selected this year to represent the MidEast Region in a new National Grand Prix Racing Series.

The course offers a 2 mile run, 22 mile bike and another 2 mile run. The challenging but fair course winds along the Ohio River and Buffalo Trails of centuries ago and includes the famed Big Hiney Hill. Cash Prizes are offered to the top 3 Male and Female winners and also for new course records for Run1, Bike and Overall Time.

Last year's winners were Michelle Kitze 1:32:04 (Record) and Jon Hastings 1:20:38 (Record). Maysville offers many tourism attractions for the entire family so do not miss out on this great racing weekend. For more information call the Chamber at (888) 875-6297 or go to www.maysvillekentucky.com or www.hfpracing.com or register online at active.com.

How much are the cash prizes? If Jon Hastings is a lock to get the money why should we come?

Flat tire? Bad day? Nobody is ever a lock on anything, all athletes should know that by now.

Agree. Nothing is a lock. What are the cash prizes?

There are only cash primes - you have to break course records to get the cash. The race is awesome, though. Enjoy!

FastD that isn't what it says. "Cash Prizes are offered to the top 3 Male and Female winners and also for new course records for Run1, Bike and Overall Time." What I what to know before traveling 200 miles is how much are each cash award. What is purse?

Hastings is a Lock unless Eric Mcbride can beat him (No one else will unless he flats)and I think it is going to be a very very tight race! I would almost prefer to watch the thing just to see these two duke-it-out. But being the first Champion they ever had (before real Duathlete's started showing up), I must race.

Do not expect any flats on the course - it is no guarantee against flats but the roads (about all 22 miles) should be swept again like last year and even minor road defects painted. Last year I know of only 1 flat out of 120+ racers. Jon also knows how to tackle Big Hiney which is a big help. Nick - you might remember you took the lead on Big Hiney in 2001 because the leader lost his chain trying to grind it out.

Road bike or aero bike? Is Big Hiney the only hill? Is drafting illegal?

Drafting is not legal. It is a sanctioned event and there will be an official present. Big Hiney is the only major hill but there are a lot of rollers. The road is smooth so speed is important. A difficult aspect of Big Hiney is that you have to make a very sharp U turn to head up it - no chance to make a run at it.

I caught the leader before the hill I have to say. I did not even know he lost his chain until after the race. I won by five minutes, the chain was not going to help.

This is going to be a great race between the top dogs. People I talk to say Jon Hastings bike and run records are going to be broken this year. I heard there are some fast people doing this race. Is he going to show up for the challenge or stay in Columbus?

I biked the course and it looks great. Any holes have been patched up any holes and cracks.

This includes the French Quarter Inn. Other door prizes will also be given at random for the not as fast people. Stay tuned for all last minute race details!

Last minute details! Racers are coming from 10 States and Canada for the 2003 Version of the Buffalo Trails Duathlon. Participation will have doubled again.

Packet Pickup will be 2-8pm at the French Quarter Inn on Friday and Saturday Morning at Limestone Mall (Near the Chamber office between 2nd street and McDonald - has a fountain.

For those of you that will be traveling to Maysville from the North side of the River and on State Route 52 - The old bridge is closed - Travelers coming west on 52 from Portsmouth will need to travel to the new bridge which is about 3 miles West of the old Bridge - go across and then head back to Maysville on RTe 8 (part of the bike course). For Racers that will be traveling East on 52 from Cincy or area you will come to the new bridge right before Aberdeen and there will be signs pointing out that the old bridge is closed and you need to take the new one. I take this detour everyday to work and it just takes a few minutes longer. Do watch your speed in Aberdeen. The town needs money.

2 rooms will be made available to the champions. I was curious if anyone would make comments about the sharing.

It is going to be a great race. The scenery will be great and the town is very excited. THe decorated yard contest should be much better this year. A great post race party is again planned. Hope to see you all there
Sincerely,

Mark Day D.C., CSCS, DACBSP
