A crowd of 300 (including 68 military entrants) started the Devil Dog Duathlon held on the Camp Pendleton Marine base.  The countdown-style start was marred by a spill of several athletes and some lost shoes, but the rest of the race went off without a hitch.  Well-staffed by smiling and efficient Marines, the run was an out-and-back on a mix of pavement, gravel and dirt trail with some small rises to get the heart rate up.  The bike was a smooth out-and-back route through the scenic hills of Camp Pendleton.

In the men's race, 3 men went under 17:00 on the first run led by David Bartis and followed by last year's 4th place finisher Kevin Palmer.  John Brazelton and Jim Knight posted the fastest bike splits to move into the top 3, with Palmer posting the fastest final run to take the win.

In the women's race, defending champ Sue Davis, and last year's runner up Anissa Seguin, were back for a rematch, but their day was spoiled by the young Canadian National Team member Samantha McGlone, down in San Diego for some warm weather training.  Eventual 5th place finisher Jessica Tranchina led in the first run, with McGlone on her heels.  As in the men's race, Seguin and Davis posted the fastest bike splits to move into the top three and come into T2 with
McGlone, but McGlone powered away on the final run for the win.

Awards were given in both civilian and military divisions.  Top military male was Tim Tapply in 4th overall.  Top military female was Bevin Keen.
