Dannon Duathlon Carlsbad/US Pro Champoinships
Sunday, October 22.  Carslbad, California.
5k/30k/5k.  $12,000 Pro Purse.

A stacked field is lining up for Sunday's race as duathletes from five continents are set to compete.  With a prize purse of $12,000 the pro field will be the largest in the US since Powerman Alabama.  Leading the pro field is Greg Watson, winner of 5 of 6 Dannon Duathlons this year.  Among those that will challenge him are New Zealand's Peter Clode, 1996 World Champion Andrew Noble, Paul Sklar, Brian Barkhouse, and Henrik Svarre of Denmark.

The women's field is led by Kimberly Bruckner.  Ranked fifth in the world, Bruckner has not been beaten in a non drafting race in over two years.  Bike Pro Men (17):
Greg Watson, Paul Sklar, David Polin, Craig Reese, Marc DeLeon, Scot Young, Chris Tolonen, Eric Schwartz, Marc Voit, LeRoy Popowski, Kenny Souza, Brian Barkhouse (CAN), Andrew Noble (AUS), Henrik Svarre (DEN), Peter Clode (NZL), Richard Graemiger (SUI), Nic Sacco (RSA)

Pro Women (7):
Kimberly Bruckner, Sue Davis, Anne Preisig, Marjan Huizing, Michelle Palmisano, Dolly Ginter, Agnes Eppers. racing has limited her duathlon racing this year, and she will be challenged by Bolivia's Agnes Eppers, who has already clinched the 2000 Dannon Series title.  The women's field contains several top finishers at Duathlon Worlds.  Eppers placed ninth, Anne Preisig 13th, and Marjan Huizing 18th.

The title of US Champion is also on the line.  Kenny Souza will be racing in his hometown and if he can pull out a victory he would be the first multisport athlete in the world to claim a National title in three different decades.  By his own admission Souza doesn't train enough to compete at the top level, but he has increased his training leading into this race.  At Dannon Naperville in September Souza's biking was as strong as anyone, but he lost too much time on the runs.

Last year's female National Champion Nancy Riedel has retired which leave's Bruckner as the favorite.
