Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon Sunday, June 29, 2003. Lubbock, Texas 1.2m swim, 56m bike, 13.1m run & Sprint Raider Triathlon - 500m/20k/5k 30 Ironman Hawaii slots www.buffalospringslaketriathlon.com
For the 14th straight year Lubbuck, Texas hosts one of the toughest half ironmans in the US. It's a race where the smartest racers excel, and mistakes result in a painful trot to the finish line. Lubbock in late June is typically hot (average high of 91 degrees), windy, and humid.
Last year's event saw better than expected conditions, and James Bonney took advantage, setting a new course record of 4:04:25. Bonney is back for this year's race, however he was recently married and may not be back to last year's form. The strength of the pro field has dropped slightly in the last two years, probably because of Half Ironman Utah and Ironman Couer D'Alene, but the age group field is expected to fill again this year at 1400 participants for the half ironman and the shorter Sprint Raider Triathlon. Thirty Ironman slots are available. Each of the four age men's age groups between 25 and 44 each get two slots, and all other age groups have one slot. The hand cycle division also has four Ironman slots.
Joanna Zeiger, winner of the 2001 event, and Ironman specialist Mary Uhl are the two women's favorites. In tough conditions Zeiger won the 2001 race in 4:29. Zeiger will join Ironman champion Dave Scott for a pre-race talk on Saturday at Alderson's Subaru, a new sponsor of the event.
On race day Jerry MacNeil will do the announcing and Duathlon.com will be at the course with same day coverage. Below are photos from the course, plus results from the 2001 & 2002 event.
