Boulder, Colorado—Former Ironman Canada champion Chuckie Veylupek, better known in the triathlon world as Chuckie V, will race the third annual 5430 Triathlon this Sunday at Boulder Reservoir. The half ironman distance triathlon (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run) and relay will begin at 7 a.m. followed by the inaugural 5430 Duathlon (6.5-mile run, 56-mile bike, 6.5-mile run) at 7:05 a.m.
Veylupek, the 1999 Ironman Canada champion, joins a stellar field that includes 2002 Ultraman champion Gordo Byrn, inaugural 5430 iron-distance champion Dennis Meeker and last year's half-iron distance champion Kirk Framke. Veylupek was ninth at the Half-Ironman California in April.
In addition, four-time Hawaii Ironman finisher Paul Martin, a below-the-knee amputee, will be competing in the half. Martin, a Boulder resident, will give a motivational speech and sign copies of his book, "One Man's Leg," at packet pickup on Saturday at Southern Hills Middle School.
"This will be my longest race of the year since I've been busy with other obligations, so it's great to have a long-distance race in my backyard where I can get cheered on by some of my friends, race on familiar roads and be home in time for dinner," said Martin.
5430 Triathlon The triathlon is a two-loop, 1.2-mile swim in Boulder Reservoir; a 56-mile bike from the Res to Carter Lake and back; and a two-loop, 13.1-mile run on soft surfaces around the Reservoir. Relay teams of two, three or four persons will compete in the triathlon.
5430 Duathlon The inaugural 5430 Duathlon is part of the 2003 USAT Duathlon Grand Prix series, consisting of 10 USAT-sanctioned duathlons: one race in each USAT region plus a series championship. The duathlon is a 6.5-mile run, 56-mile bike and 6.5-mile run taking place on the same course as the triathlon.
Race sponsors include Go Fast, Trek, Nike and Boulder Running Company. Flatiron Athletic Club, Vecchio's Bicicletteria and HammerGel are providing primes for the top swim, bike and run times for men and women. The race benefits the ALS Association, the national not-for-profit health organization dedicated to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).
The race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Race registration closed on July 4. For more information on the 5430 and the Boulder Stroke and Stride visit www.5430tri.com, and for details on the USAT Duathlon Grand Prix Series go to www.usatriathlon.org.
