1.5k swim, 42k bike, 10k run
Complete Results

Simon Lessing won the Boulder Peak Triathlon on his first try. Lessing, who moved to Boulder last winter, was the only man to break one hour for the 42k bike course, had over a minute lead as he began the run. His 32:05 10k was nearly a minute faster than runner-up Tim DeBoom. Ben Bucholz was third and Tony DeBoom was fourth.

For the second week in a row Nicole DeBoom was the biggest money winner in the DeBoom family. DeBoom led the race coming off the bike and finished 1:47 in front of South African Erlank as DeBoom won the race for the second time. Desiree Ficker was third and Amanda Stevens finished fourth.

Former pro Nate Llerandi won the age group race with a time of 1:59:13, a time that would have placed him sixth among the pros. Former pro Teri Duthie was the top age group woman.

Did Beven crash or flat, or did the altitude get to him? 20 minutes behind Lessing? Third place among the women? (No offense, ladies.)

I think the Croc is hurt and can't run, don't know why he finished...

Don't give Brad Beven such a hard time... He has had huge sucess in the past and some hard times. Boulder Peak is a small race, doesn't mean anything. If you had took the time to check the results out, it was obivous that he had a difficult time on the run. Probably due to injuries he has been fighting for some time. Also you can never compare a man to woman, they are two different species

Don't get me wrong. Brad Beven is one of my all-time favorites. I watched tape of him to get inspired when I started tri's. He dropped off the radar for a while. Injuries? Has he ever expressed an interest in going long, or will that wail until after Athens?

By the way, congratulations to Simon for the win. And how about Tim pulling off a second 2 months before Kona.

Age Group versus Pro?

If you look at the Age Group results there is one guy, Llerandi, a pro who was 20th in the World Championships in 1994, who chose to race as an amateur and threw away a $500 check for 6th in the pro race, and you've got a guy, Krause, who can't get a pro license who would have liked to have the $200 check for 9th pro beating the majority of the "pro" field.

Just an observation on the strange intricacies of this complicated multisport world.

Yeah... there are some top end age groupers that can compete at a pro level. This isn't really big news. But, when it comes to pro fields, Boulder Peak is not deep at all. Also, you have to add at least a minute since the pros don't have wetsuits, and the pro race is also much later in the day, meaning hotter and (on a typical Colorado day) windier.

Does Llerandi still have a pro card or only race as an age grouper these days? Not everyone is going to race as pro the rest of their careers. At some point they need to either move back to the age group ranks or start getting regularly pummeled in the pro division (although Nate proved he still has some juice to compete with the elite). There are other aging pros who compete well into their master years. Until they create a "Formerly Pro" division, age groupers could get their ARSES handed to them by these guys moving from the pro ranks back to the age group ranks. It is what it is.

Maybe I can clear up some confusion here. At the height of my pro career, I was ranked as the top american and 6th overall on the ITU World Cup circuit. I retired in anticipation of my daughter being born, before the '97 season. Now I have Alexis, 6, and Noah, 3, as my top priority. After 5 years of not competing, I decided to see if the "fires still burned", which they do. I train fewer than 10 hours/week (usually 7-8) and treat the sport as the hobby it is for me now. I'd like to get back to Nationals next year and win the race outright. If I can do that on my current training budget, great. If not, so what? BTW, cramping on the run the final 5 miles slowed me down about 2 minutes worth.

i don't know what kind of priority the pros place on boulder peak, probably not the highest. but the field is seems to be pretty deep to me. 5-time world champion Lessing, 2 time Ironman world champion Tim Deboom, his brother Tony the Ironman Utah champion, multiple Ironman champion Bryan Rhodes, Accenture race series star Bucholz, multi time Wildflower winner Widoff,Ironman champ Mike Lovato, British star Chris Moffatt, Formula 1 series record holder and World Cup star Brad Beven. there aren't too many non-drafting races other than maybe classics like Alcatraz and Chicago that sport fields like that! but don't come to boulder, masters workouts are already too crowded

Most of those guys are Boulder locals. Or come from a short distance away.
