COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 2, 2003) - At least 1,250 triathletes, the largest number ever, are expected Saturday in Shreveport, La., for the 2003 USA Triathlon National Age Group Championship for Olympic distance triathlon. This race is the only U.S. age group qualifier for the 2004 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Championships in May in Madeira Island, Portugal. The 2004 world championships are being held early in the year due to the 2004 Olympic Games in August. The top 16 finishers in each age group in Shreveport will qualify. Slots will roll down nine places.

The Shreveport course will consist of a one-lap, 1.5k swim at Champion Lake, a 40k bike along Clyde Fant Parkway and the Red River, and a flat 10k run from East 70th Street to Preston. The temperature in Shreveport on Saturday is expected to be 84 degrees with 20 percent humidity. Other events surrounding the race include a women's breakfast, a pre-race pasta dinner, an expo and an awards ceremony that will honor top-10 finishers in each age group, world medalists from 2002, defending national champions and All-Americans.

Pete Kain  (Cupertino, Calif.) and Julie Swail (Irvine, Calif.) were the overall winners last year. Kain, who won the men's 35-39 age group in 2002, is back for 2003, although he has moved up to the men's 40-44 age division. Swail turned elite/pro in 2003 and is working to make the 2004 U.S. Olympic triathlon team. Others on this year's start list who won age group titles last year are:

Melanie Holloway (Roswell, Ga.; w30-34)
Sherry Coons (Los Angeles, Calif.; w35-39)
Karen Chequer-Pfeiffer (Santa Rosa, Calif.; w45-49)
Jim Bruskewitz (Madison, Wis.; m50-54)
Mary Dunn (Cheshire, Conn.; w50-54)
Paula Larsen (Horicon, Wis.; w55-59)

Other past national champions who will be competing in Shreveport include:

Susan Bradley-Cox (Lexington, Ky.; w65-69)
Jo Garuccio (Salt Lake City, Utah; w50-54)
Bruce Gennari (Brentwood, Tenn.; m35-39)
Karen McKeachie (Ann Arbor, Mich.; w50-54)
Donna Smyers (Montpelier, Vt.; w45-49)

Look for Michael Boehmer (who is pro in Du's but not tri's) to really tear up the bike course (despite the flat profile). most of the younger divisions look really full, should be a great day of racing.

Boehmer actually tends to race better on flat bike courses.
