KALIUA-KONA, Hawaii- Peter Reid and Lori Bowden made it a clean sweep for Canada by claiming the men’s and women’s titles respectively at the 25th Ironman World Championship held in Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii on Saturday.
The event featured more than 1,600 athletes competing a far cry from the 15 athletes who first took to the water back in the first Ironman event, held in Hawaii in 1978. 2003 saw more than 20,000 athletes compete in 17 different Ironman events held all around the world.

Reid bested a field that featured five former World Champions and the bulk of the world’s top triathletes. The title was the third Ironman World Championship for Reid, who also claimed titles in 1998 and 2000 and has won a total of 10 Ironman titles, most by any male athlete.

The men’s event really came down to the run, as a pack of 10 athletes attempted to chase down Germany’s Normann Stadler who left for the marathon with a four-minute lead over the field. Reid, who left the transition area in third place, overtook two-time defending champion Tim DeBoom (Lyons, Colo.) and then Stadler, hammering his way to a total time of eight hours, 22 minutes and 35 seconds, to finish six minutes in front of runner-up Rutger Beke of Belgium, who recorded his best-ever finish at the Ironman World Championship.

Beke was second with a time of 8:28:27, with New Zealand’s Cameron Brown finishing second for the second straight year with a time of 8:32:02. Stadler held on to finish fourth in 8:32:47, while rising star Luke Bell of Australia finished fifth in 8:34:38.

Bowden claimed the second Ironman title of her career and much like Reid, used a blistering run to claim the second Ironman World title of her illustrious career. The win was also the 12th title of her career. Bowden used a marathon time of three hours, two minutes and 10 seconds to post an overall time of 9:11:55. Four-time Ironman World Champion Natascha Badmann of Switzerland finished second with an overall time of 9:17:08 with Germany’s Nina Kraft, who led for much of the day on the bike, finishing third overall with a time of 9:17:16. Badmann had claimed the last two women’s world titles, while Kraft was the runner-up one year ago.

Canadian’s also swept the fourth and fifth spot as Heather Fuhr (9:19:02) and Lisa Bentley (9:22:41) made it three Canadian females in the top five. Fuhr was the 1997 Ironman World Champion, while Bentley took titles at Ironman Australia and Ironman Canada this year.

More than 1,600 athletes from 43 countries competed in the event, with professionals competing for a $430,000 pro prize purse. Reid and Bowden each took home $100,000 for their winning efforts.

all of this Macca bashing is getting old. Cal, I assume that you know Chris personally and know that he runs his mouth, or are you just going by what is printed in the press? Do you believe everything to be true that you read in print. The magazines like to create a story, and Chris is a good target for that. I think his record speaks volumes. 5 Ironman races, 2 wins, a second in a sprint finish, a DNF and a 9 hour finish. I'd do anything for a record like that.

TDB apparently passed a kidney stone on the run. No matter though, I don't think anyone in the race would have run down Peter on Saturday.

Agreed with Calgaree. I don't know McCormack personally, and I dont' believe everything the Press writes, but I suspect that McCormack chooses to make himself an easy target by running his mouth and making bold predictions that thus far, he hasn't been close to fulfilling. Maybe third time will be a charm and he will eventually equal or surpass M. Allen's record as he predicted, but right now, the only thing he's proven in terms of Ironman racing is that he can win his homeland's race.

Great job for Peter Reid, you had to know he'd be a factor after pretty much cruising in for 2nd place last year. I appreciate that Macca has the guts to speak his mind when asked questions by the press. He says what they all think, all of the top guys train all year with the goal in mind of winning Kona. Didn't Mark Allen fail 6 times in his attempt to win, but he did ok after that. Macca will be back.

What does everyone think of the pack of riders riding at the front. I guess there was a rule change made that allowed them to stagger which was supposed to break things up. Doesn't look like it worked.

If your gonna bash the MACCA for running his mouth and toughing it out to a plus 9 hr effort, bash TDB for passing a kidney stone(ah according to a press release form his management company, sounds like damage control)and dropping out.

Many people, view TDB as the gold child of IM racing, and he is so honorable and a top notch guy and you can't say anything wrong about him. Macca on the other hand is an easy target, he is not from here, is very brash and a great athlete. I suspect that most people that bash the pros, couldn't hold their jockstraps and probably don't train as much as they talk. Everybody has a DNF here and there, everybody blows up(ahhh for going too hard-is that a sin) once in a while, and everyone talks junk, just so happens whens MACCA talks junk the world is listening.

And anyone who says Macca's IM experience is bigus b/c he wins in his homeland is flat out stupid. I give respect to anyone that goes out and does an IM distance race, as I haven't yet gone the distance and am amazed at the acheivement itself. So lets not be haters kids.

BTW-I put this out there, sometime in 2004, Duathlon.com should sponsor a race for all of the people that visit this site to show up at. the cool people, the sexy people, the tri-geeks, the haters, the bashers, the "anoyn" posters, and we will see who cna put ther money where their mouth is.....my quess is, you'll have a bunch of people that show with nice bikes and lots to say, but not much action!!!!!! Yes, I am talking junk!!!!

why the heck would someone use a kidney stone as damage control... why even accuse someone of fabricating a reason to DNF. Why take a shot at the guy like that?? Deboom has earned respect, so show some.

In a circular way, my point exactly. I think all of those guys/gals deserve the same resepct...so why slam any of then!!!! Do I think someone of TDM class, exprerience and exposure would fabricate, heck no...he's got too much riding on it. Same for MACCA, same for Larsen.

Well all of you that bash macca have no right to do so. I raced against macca in AZ at the SOMA 1/2 Ironman and he kicked everyone’s ass. This man is unbelievable, runs like the wind and rides like a bullet. Unless you raced against a guy like this keep your mouth shut and just keep watching. If you think you can do better, come on out and allow us to hand your ass to you on the road. If you don’t do the sport don’t let your mouth Wright a check your ass can't cash.... That’s all I have to say.

I agree with tricoach. I haven't raced macca but all this bashing him just because he speaks his mind is wrong. I think that he is a great athlete and so what if he runs his mouth a bit. Anyone that thinks they have the right slam him just because they believe the press can just go home and watch him kick everyone's ass from the couch in front of the TV, which is where they belong if they can't enjoy losing to a decent athlete.
