The 2004 ITU World Duathlon Championships have been awarded to Geel, Belgium on May 28-31, 2004. The announcement was made today by the International Triathlon Union in anticipation of the final event in the 2003 World Cup Duathlon series to take place in Varallo Sesia, Italy this weekend, October 25-26, 2003.
It is expected the complete Duathlon series in 2004 will consist of 6 or 7 events and the full schedule will be confirmed shortly. Events in Alpharetta, USA; Belfast Northern Ireland and Cincinnati, USA have already been confirmed.
The event in Geel is sure to attract a large amount of local support. Three time and current reigning World Champion, Benny Vansteelant is from Belgium. The 2003 World Championships saw Benny Vansteelant top the elite men's podium while Benny's younger brother Joeri topped the men's under 23 podium.
The World Long Course Duathlon Championships are scheduled to take place in Fredericia, Denmark on August 1, 2004. The 2004 Duathlon season is shaping up to be among the most exciting to date.

"Events in Alpharetta, USA; Belfast Northern Ireland and Cincinnati, USA have already been confirmed." If I am not mistaken, I believe Northern Ireland has been and still is going through some sort of religious guerilla civil war. Doesn't sound like the best place to host an ITU World Cup DU-athon.

Yeah Norseman, Regarding Belfast being 'unsafe'. Like the USA is also 'safe' to host a world cup race!
Northern Ireland have their problems just like any other country, not to mention the USA who at this moment is the last place I would travel to!
