A total of 1575 people finished Ironman Hawaii, and 119 of them ran a marathon fast enough to qualify them for the Boston Marathon. The Boston qualifying times range from 3:10 to over 4 hours for older age groups, and 8 hours for the physically challenged division. Shozo Natori of Japan made it by the slimmest margin - just 3 seconds faster than his 3:15 qualifying standard. Women's winner Lori Bowden made it by the largest margin. Her time of 3:02:10 was 42:50 faster than her 3:45 qualifying standard.

Is this a theoretical point/observation or can someone actually use this time for a Boston qualifier? Would the BAA accept these times? Obviously if they can run this at the end of an IM, then in all likelihood they could easily hammer out a qualifier in an open marathon.

They made a big deal out of the fact that this year in Hawaii racers can qualify for Boston. The race director from the Boston Marathon was at the awards dinner and made a speech to that effect. So, yes.

I recall Mark Allen trying to qualify for the Olympic Marathon trials in Berlin a few years back...think he dropped out of the race after 30K or so. Also, wasn't it Ryan Bolton who won the Tucson Marathon recently?
Any other reports of triathletes racing in stand-alone marathons?

Do Duathlete marathon times count? It's not the most impressive time, but I ran my first marathon the weekend after PowerMan TN in a 2:31. I'll have to find out what it feels like to suffer through one after 112 on the bike.
