Triathlantic Sanctions With USAT

BALTIMORE, March 9, 2004 - Triathlantic Association announced today the addition of the Steelman Duathlon to its 2004 race roster. The June 27th event is the first race Triathlantic Association has ever sanctioned with USA Triathlon (USAT), providing duathletes with an additional race in which to obtain national ranking eligibility. The Steelman also presents athletes in the mid-Atlantic with the opportunity to compete in the only Formula 1 Olympic distance race in the region.

In order to qualify for a national ranking, athletes must compete in at least three USAT sanctioned races per season. In response to athlete demands, Triathlantic has partnered with USAT to sanction the Steelman Duathlon, providing duathletes with an additional qualifying race centrally located in the mid-Atlantic region, cutting down on travel expenses and making qualification more readily accessible.

“Having one of Triathlantic Association's high-quality races sanctioned with USAT will have a huge positive impact for the multi-sport athletes in the mid-Atlantic region,” commented Greg Sabo, USAT Duathlon Commission-Chair. “There are many duathletes in the mid-Atlantic who have not ranked nationally because excessive travel is required to participate in three USAT duathlons. By providing duathletes with an additional qualifying event located in the center of the mid-Atlantic region, athletes will not have to invest their time and money into travel in order to achieve a national ranking.”

The Steelman Duathlon is scheduled to take place at Stansbury Park in Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, June 27, 2004. This Formula 1 style duathlon, defined as a 5-leg bike-run event, is the only race of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region, providing athletes with a unique event for 2004. The 2-mile run, 13-mile bike, 2-mile run, 13-mile bike, 2-mile run combination will be staged on a closed, multiple loop course with views of the Baltimore Harbor and Chesapeake Bay. The flat course will create an exciting race that provides optimal viewing for spectators. A minimum cash purse of $2,000 will be available to the top finishers in each age group as well as top finishers in the separate elite wave. To register online visit Triathlantic Association's Website: www.triath.com.

“Triathlantic is thrilled to work with USAT to serve athletes by providing them with an additional qualifying race in the mid-Atlantic region,” commented Brad Jaeger, president and founder of Triathlantic Association. “We are anticipating a large turnout for the Steelman due its unique combination of distances. Once again, Triathlantic is providing a one-of-a-kind event atmosphere that connects both athletes and spectators with the thrill and fun of multi-sport competition.”

Just another example of how Brad, despite his misgivings about USAT, does what he feels is best for his athletes. He has always been very responsive to our concerns. Look at what he did with his refund and transfer policy. We asked for one and he came up with one.
Looks like a fun race. I'll be there.

Excellent!! I know there are a lot of mid-atlantic region athletes on this board so I hope to see everyone at this race. I will be making the 8 hour drive up from Charlotte to do this race.

There were two reasons why we decided to sanction this event with USAT.
First and foremost was Greg Sabo. I've known him for a lot of years and Greg is really all about what is best for the athlete. He is not self absorbed with the politics of the sport, but providing the best races for the athletes he represents. The region should feel proud that they have someone like this watching out for them. He convinced me that with co-operation that this would work to everyone's satisfaction. A win-win situation.
Second was the athletes that have been attending Triathlantic events for years and years. They asked me to try one event with USAT so they didn't have to travel to find a third race for them to qualify at. Because of their loyalty and friendship over so many years, I felt that I would abide by their wishes and do what I could to help them out.

This just goes to show what can be done if groups (or people representing groups) can accomplish if they are willing to compromise and talk.

Hope to see you on the 27th of June

Three years ago, my 10 year old son wanted to do the swim part of the Cape May Triathlon, but we was very unsure of himself. He called Brad and talked to him for an hour and he was convinced that he could do the swim. On the Saturday before the race even though he was busy setting up the race, Brad spent two hours working with my son in the water helping him learn how to swim in open water. After the race, my son was ecstatic and told Brad about a swim meet that he was in later that summer and could Brad show up to it. I never thought that he would, but Brad showed up at my son’s swim meet, which was 3 hours away from Baltimore, my son still talks about it to this day. I am sure stories like mine are not alone for the things that Brad has does for others and not just the athletes.
Once again, Brad has shown how much his athletes mean to him by making this compromise. We owe it to him for all that he has done for us to show up at this race, either as a participant or a volunteer. My son and I will be there helping any way we can.
Put Brad and Greg on the board of USAT and maybe it will bring some integrity back to our NGB.

The word "integrity" and the group "board of USAT" used in the same sentence. Wow - what a concept! I'm sure that we see that happen - very soon.
