The ITU's top ranked woman earned an Olympic berth on Sunday. Barb Lindquist, one of the top women in the world for several years, earned the Olympic spot that eluded her in 2000. Only one US spot was awarded on Sunday, and Lindquist took it by finishing 16 seconds in front of Susan Williams, the third place finisher and the second American.
Lindquist and Sheila Taormina finished the bike in the lead, followed closely by a two person group of Liz Blatchford and Susan Williams. No other women were in contetion. Julie Swail rode solo in fifth place, two minutes back, and the next women's group was another three minutes back. Blatchford and Williams ran faster than Lindquist, but not by enough, as Lindquist won by 12 seconds over Blatchford. Taormina slowed on the run to finish fourth.
