Buffalo Trails Duathlon Maysville, Kentucky Saturday, May 29, 2004 Complete Results
Jacob Porter of Barboursville, West Virginia and Michelle Kitze of Kettering, Ohio are the overall winners of the 2004 Buffalo Trails Duathlon. The winners took home $150 each and receive a free nights stay for next year's race at the French Quarter Inn, which is located at the transition area. Awards were also given for fastest run and bike splits.
Kris Lasure of Maysville cranked out a blistering bike portion of 56:32 to overtake early leaders of Hauke (bested Jon Hastings run course record), Porter and Brinkman (Cincinnati) but just could not hold on during the second 2 mile run as Porter attacked hard. Mike Tigani of Cincinnati was able to overcome the effects of having a new addition to the family just 8 days earlier by turning out a quick second transition and strong second run to overtake Lasure just yards from the finish line. The final times were Porter (1:29:57), Tigani (1:31:32) and Lasure (1:31:35).
Michelle Kitze overcame recent injuries of cracked ribs to win her third Buffalo Trails Duathlon Title. Kitze was able to open up a large lead on the bike after Cara Goetz of Ft. Wright, Kentucky had her in her sights in the first transition. Goetz put in a strong bike to hold onto second and Judy Mclaughlin, a nationally ranked triathlete from Springboro, Ohio, cranked out the third fastest female bike time to enable them to finish second and third overall. Their final overall times were Kitze (1:36:59), Goetz (1:42:00) and McLaughlin (1:44:58).

The Buffalo Trails Duathlon, named because of the thousands of buffalo that once roamed the region hundreds of years ago is in Maysville, Kentucky. The Maysville- Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce is responsible for putting on this community event and Pepsi is the Gold Sponsor. In only its fourth year of existence the BTD has attracted racers from as far away as California and racers from 8 different states attended this year. Timing was performed by The End Result Company. Mark Lulling was the USAT official on hand to referee. Thanks to all of those that attended. Next year's race is scheduled for May 28, 2005

Another great race by Dr. Day and the City of Maysville! It is amazing to see how much support there is for this race in the local community. They may have inspired my wife to try her first du! Got Buffalo Trails marked for 2005.

Was it because of HFP or the designation of Grand Prix race last year? This racer heard other racers comment how things were more personable with more accurate and quick race results this year.

Was the course short this year? The bike and runs both seemed shorter from previous years. Also roads were pretty bad in some spots. Maybe give less awards and put some money in more volunteers or signs around potholes and bad areas. Other than that fun race.

Too bad Jon Hastings was not there this year. I like to race against the best. His course record was broken by an up and coming racer. He will need to come back and reestablish his record in 2005. I will be there and I want to race against the best. Maybe his whole team will come. I think I can beat most of them. Anyone want to start wagers now?

I do not know what you are talking about course records be broken by an up and comer. John H went 11:58 (1st run), 54:30 (bike) and 12:54 (2nd run)last year. I do not see any of those splits beat this year. Let's face it, competition was way down due to other races plus the good points made earlier. Also, Kris Lasure had a great bike split but too bad he could not run. And last, kudos to the 40+ year old finishers. They took 6 out of the top 10 finishes. This inludes a 50+ year old.

Last time I checked a 12:03 isn't faster than an 11:58, somebody got some free money. Looks like the records still stand.

I think that Keera Karis will set new records in 2005 at Buffalo Trails. I hope she is there. Some of the top ladies were overheard saying how they want to toe the line with Karis next year. I hope she comes. It will be a great race. Dr. Day and the Chamber work very hard and it shows. This is a great race.

You seem to be a purveyor of conveniently placed information. We all know BTD is a great race, however if "you" are so interested in racing with Kiera, myself and the rest of the team, there are plenty of other races to join us for throughout the year - no need to wait until next year.

My mistake on the first run record being broken. Radio was reporting it being broken during the race and I did not double check things to confirm. Jon's record still stands it appears although a relay runner did run faster this year but it does not count towards the record. As for the roads - a water main break 36 hours before race time did not help and things were marked quite clearly. Thanks for telling me though because that is the very first complaint I have heard. Perhaps I will go look for Big Hiney's Big Brother next year.
I hope more top notch racers come next year but honestly we enjoy everyone from the Hastings elite to the folks bringing up the rear battling polycystic kidney disease and diabetes.
