This is the third time the Powerman Spain in Las Palmas die Gran Canaria Took place. About 200 Athletes participated, with beautiful weather circumstances, at the distance of 10-60-10. At the men field a lot of World class top Duathletes were gathered at the starting line. Herewith the ingredient for a thrilling race.

The men race After the first run the American Greg Watson and the Frenchman Nicolas Lebrun came first out of the transition area, with in a minute followed by a group with the winner of Powerman Japan Olaf Sabatschus(GER), Armand v.d. Smissen(HOL), Vincent Aldebert(FRA) and four other athletes. Daniel Keller(SUI) took his bike as number 10 after more than two minutes. On the bike it became more and more obvious that the winner only could be one of the two leaders Greg Watson(USA) or Nicolas Lebrun(FRA). In the last 20 km Greg Watson(USA) used his turbo and made a gap of one minute for the second transition.

On the bike Daniel Keller(SUI) came close to Armand v.d. Smissen(N) and Olaf Sabatschus. But they started the second run a three minutes after the first man Greg Watson(USA) At the last 5 km Greg Watson paid for his big effort on the bike. There came the man with a big hammer. But he was able to finish 2nd. Daniel Keller(SUI) was happy with his last peak training for the World Championship Long Distance next Sunday, November 12, in Pretoria South Africa. He finished 5th.

The women race. Annaleah Emmerson(GBR) showed already from the Start that she was the woman to beat today. Immediate after the start she took the leading position with such strenght that the rest of the women field could only fight for the second place. After the first 10km she had a lead of over 1 min. On the bike the Spanish girl Virginia Berasategui and the Belgium girl Hilde Wellens were started close to eachother on place 2 and 3. At the beginning of the 60 km bike effort they stayed close but suddenly the Virginia Berasategui(ESP) showed to be the real number 2. Mette Molgaard (DEN) took the 4 th place. A strong performance gave the only 22 years old Katja Nispel to finish 5th in this world class field. A new face to watch for the future.

Next race: November 12, 2000 ITU Powerman World Championship in Pretoria/ South Africa

I think that Greg really needs to be congratualted on a great season. He really has made a dent in what has been a Euro dominated sport for the past couple of years. Way to go Greg!!!

Good race in Las Palmas with a very enthousiastic organizer Jordi Gonzales. About the race, first run with Spanish Capo, Watson and van der Smissen in the lead. Lebrun closed the gap to Watson of 40 seconds in 15k, but in the second part of the cycling Watson left Lebrun again. Despite this effort Lebrun came back again in the last 5k-lap. Behind them van der Smissen was catched by Sabatchus and Keller after 50k and van der Smissen needed to sprint to reach the podium
