Mansfield, Ohio - August 30, 2004 - The International Powerman Association (I.P.A.) and Fat Rabbit Racing today announced that the Mid-Ohio Grand Prix Duathlon - Long Course will become Powerman Ohio in 2005. Powerman Ohio will take place in May 2005 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, located in Mansfield, Ohio.

“We are very excited to be partnering with the International Powerman Association to produce Powerman Ohio. Our goal is create international destination events and becoming Powerman Ohio is a giant step toward accomplishment of that goal,” said Craig Thompson, Event Director and Co-Founder of Fat Rabbit Racing. “The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is a great venue that is not only fun and exciting for athletes but as well for family and friends to watch and participate.” Thompson added.

“I am delighted to start working together with Fat Rabbit Racing”, said John Raadschelders, President of the I.P.A. “During my first visit last May, I spent a whole weekend with the team and was impressed by their straight forward going and persistence, despite bad weather, to bring the best result as an organizer for all the participants at the Mid Ohio Grand Prix Duathlon. Their race venue, the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, will bring a totally different and very demanding race course in the Powerman World Series”.

In 2004 several hundred athletes, from 22 states and from Canada and Europe, participated in the inaugural Mid-Ohio Grand Prix Duathlon, which featured long course,

short course and sprint course duathlons. The Mid-Ohio Grand Prix Duathlon Short Distance will take place the same day in May as new long distance 2005 Powerman Ohio.

Powerman Ohio will feature an opening 10K run on the 2.4 mile Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, a 60K bike route that includes both the track and the roads surrounding Mid-Ohio, and concludes with an 8K run. The Mid-Ohio Grand Prix Duathlon features an opening 8K run, followed by a 40K bike, and a 4K run.

Does this replace Powerman Alabama? It is not showing up on the 2005 Powerman Calendar....

Interesting. The IPA site refers to "new USA powerman races," in the plural. I wonder if that means PMNC is still on or if it's just a bad translation from German.

Seriously: What is it about US Powerman races and racetracks for other sports? PMAL's at a dogtrack, right? Now PMOH is at a car-race track?

Not that there's anything wrong with that, I guess ....

From Powerman site - date is listed as 8/15 May 2005 New Powerman USA race.

I'm so stoked! This kicks major freakin ass! Did this race last year and the course and track is awesome. Screw the rain.

Hats off to the Rabbits! You guys have been busting your ass to create event-like atmoshphere to your races.

Probably parking. Also, PAL doesn't include the track in its course. POH/MidOhio does.

I hope this is not going to be like Powerman Canada in 2002 where it was a go till a few weeks before the race and then there were not enough people and they shut the doors. So everyone get out there and race this one and support DU-athoning here in the US. I am going to bring 10 of my friends to this race. That is if I have 10 friends. Hell I will at least bring my dog.

They had Powerman Canada in 2002. They just had to change the name to Gaitineau Interantional Du. Actually was a really nice race, course was too difficult though, way tougher than Alabama. The awards actually said Powerman Canada on them, I have one to prove it.

I don't think the Powerman brand would ahve made that race any better. If all they are doing is adding a brand to an existing race, I fail to see how this will improve it. Sounds like added hype, but hype is good.

Exciting news about Powerman Ohio.

Once again racing action will return to Powerman Alabama, the race will be held on April 3. In addition, Team Magic will be working with North Carolina based Set-Up, Inc to present Powerman North Carolina. Set-Up, Inc has a fantastic reputation in event production. PMNC will be held in May. The date will be announced next week.

These high quality Powerman races should give multisport athletes something to get excited about!!

Both PMAL and PMNC will have a minimum $5,000 purse.

Its great to hear about all these upcoming Powermans coming next year, BUT, there is a real problem with the scheduling. We have enough problems retaining quality races with sufficient participant numbers, so why do they have to schedule against one-another? Powerman Alabama moving to a date against the very successful Virginia Duathlon? Powerman North Carolina in same time frame as Powerman Ohio? This is completely self destructive scheduling. There aren't enough duathletes to support concurrent major events.

I agree with your comments about scheduling. It has been a big pet peeve of mine when 2 duathlons in the same region(mid-atlantic) are scheduled for the same weekend. The sport is small enough without athletes having to pick between races.

PM AL moved back 1 week because there normal race weekend is now Easter. This will happen every 10 years or so. Unfortunately this move is now the same day as Virginia Duathlon. Since PM AL is no longer a short course qualifier a lot of athletes from the mid-atlantic will not make the long drive to alabama and will instead race Virginia Du. I expect another drop in race numbers for PM AL next year. I assume moving up 1 week would not work as they risk bad(cold) weather.

PM ohio and North Carolina are suppose to be scheduled 1 to 2 weeks apart. This is to allow Europeans to come over and do these races on 1 R/T airfare instead of making 2 seperate trips. This makes it more cost effective for the European pros to do both races.

Good info Greg, I don't mean to blast the messenger by stating the schedule reasoning is hogwash. PAL needs to move to another date. As far as PM OHIO and NC within one week of each to accomodate the European travelers, that is simply nuts. With all respect for our European friends that may come here, in order for PM and duathlon to advance in the US more time between events of this magnitude needs to take place. Runners don't run marathons on back to back weekends, neither should PM duathletes.

Greg is right about the dates. POH will be held approx 2 weeks apart from PNC if our scheduling holds together which it should but we are somewhat at the mercy of the NASCAR/CART season which doesn't finalize it schedule until late October. That is why you see the two weekends - May 8/15.

We will be coordinating with PNC to get some of the top ranked athletes in the world to participate in POH and PNC.

Relative to other duathlons, our concern is with local duathlons in OH that were held last year on the proposed weekends as POH. Hopefully, we can all work together and coordinate schedules to have the best participant representation as possible at their events and at POH.

Its great to hear of new Powerman races in the US. I hope that the OH/NC races can be properly spaced out from 2005 Long Course Du Worlds on 29.May...

Tbone, last year you had an age group purse. Will you still have the age group purse? Also, will you have one for short course, too. You guys did a great job dealing with all the weather last year. Congratulations on Powerman!

Now in the same two week period we have Virginia Du, Steelman Du, Brandywine Du, Blackwater, PMAL, PMNC in the midatlantic area. It will kill all of them.
