Ironman Hawaii - Top Men's Marathon Times

The men's marathon record at Ironman Hawaii lived another year, as Peter Reid's 2004 best time of 2:46:10 was well off Mark Allen's 1989 record of 2:40:04. While Peter Reid didn't win, his run split this year was his best ever in Hawaii. Reid has posted four of the best 10 marathon times since 1999. Age group David Criniti was just one second slower than Reid, clocking 2:46:11. Criniti had a 1:14 swim and a 5:52 bike to finish 98th (10:00). Listed below are then 10 fastest times of 2004, the top times of the last six years, and the ten best Ironman Hawaii marathons of all time.

THank You drafting officials - for letting us see who the best Ironman really is....Without drafting, those so-called great runners aren't quite as fast as they were at last years draftfest.

Ironman triathlon is an individual sport and Saturday’s men’s race was one of the few in recent years to adhere to that tradition.

we finally saw realistic finishing places on the men and especially the womens division...the women were not bunched up with the top age groupers and that made a whole lot of difference.

I knew that the new President of the WTC, which is an engineer and former ironman finisher, would make wise and smart decisions like that.

The more we have a fair ironman the more it will attract the top athletes from everywhere.

If I'm not mistaken, there should be an asterik by Van Lierde's marathon time from 1999. I think he was assesed a 3min "sin bin" penalty off the bike that year, and those 3min were added to his run time. Therefore, what he actually ran was an 'unofficial' best ever Hawaii time of 2:39. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Luc's penalty time was added to his transition time. However, I believe that when Mark and Dave ran 2:40 and 2:41 in 1989 their T2 times were included in their marathon split, so they actually ran faster.

Only the top 2 women were not bunched up with the top age group men. Despite the earlier start for the pros, the top age group men were still coming in off the bike bunched with the pro women. I will say that the men were more more spread out on the bike than in previous years.

HOLY COW! LOOK AT THE WINNING TIME IN THE M55-59 A.G. LAST YEAR THE RECORD GOT CRUSHED BY ALMOST 30 MINUTES. THIS YEAR IT GOT LOWERED TO A 9:53 WITH A 3:05 MARATHON ON THE END. IF THERE WAS A MVP AWARD GIVEN THIS HAD TO BE IT.

xtri.com has a great race report from the men and women's side - interesting to learn some of details of the race that i didn;t know about - like that fact that race officials basically followed the Pro men throughout the bike.

well, at least it was fair until the top age groupers caught up with most of the women pros. Maybe if the pros start 30 mins before the women will be even slower. It is amazing to compare their bike times with years past. 2001 was as slow as 2004..based from the statiscal report
