Nina Kraft Admits to EPO Use

News broke yesterday that German Nina Kraft, winner of this year's Ironman Hawaii, tested positive for EPO. Today the story made the front page of ESPN.com.

In the article she is quoted saying, “I am going to bear all the consequences,” to a German radio station. She took EPO during a three week period and stopped five days before Ironman Hawaii. The article goes on to say that she began using EPO late in the summer.

Remorse may be the driver of her admission. “I never really rejoiced over the victory in Hawaii. I was ashamed the entire time, especially in front of my family. I cheated.”

Assuming Kraft is DQ'd from Ironman Hawaii, Natascha Badmann would be declared the winner taking a prize of $100,000 instead of the $50,000 second place prize. Heather Fuhr would gain $25,000, moving from third to second place. Nicole Leder would pocket the $5,000 payday for 10th place, moving up from 11th.

The complete article is located here: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=1920706

The prize money schedule for 2004 was:

1st - $100,000
2nd - $50,000
3rd - $25,000
4th - $15,000
5th - $12,500
6th - $10,000
7th - $8,500
8th - $7,500
9th - $6,500
10th - $5,000

I give Nina a lot of credit for her admission. It sets a good example of why drugs are not the answer. The victory will be "empty."

That just plain sucks!!Don't give her any credit, she got caught and then admitted it, not the other way around!!!How many athletes would step up and admit they cheated unless they were caught first? none.F#@$ing crap this sucks! What the F@#$ you have to question every victory every time, that sucks..F$%# I just got over cycling and now this sport. Maybe I'm naive but I thought this sport was for the person looking for the life less ordinary....this sucks sh*&

I hope they ban her from WTC Ironman racing for life!!! I sat up all night watching the live internet feed and cried as she crossed the finish line. When she did cross I started to scream at the computer, "Yeah, finally its Nina's year, its Nina's year. Take that Natasha! Yeah" Now I feel that the whole women's race was for naught. I hate dopers and Brussel sprouts!!! I guess everyone nowadays is taking after the Finnish XC ski team. Those damn Finns dope even in the off season.

What's the policy for testing? Do they test all IM winners, the top 5, or just random? Beyond the ethical reason, seems like if you take it and win, you're sure to get caught?? It's tough. I raced in Kona, and watched her "victory" speech from our hotel balcony. Tough.

I made official request before Kona and been told that "top 3 will be tested" But now - where is those tests? I understand she was caught by other party (USASA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency). So, does it mean that WTC cheated too???? Why they didn't find EPO? Did USASA tested men? other women? Where is results, again...
I feel sorry for Nina (not for what she've done) - to me she really wanted to win and saw no other way to get it in Doping Non Tasted Event.............as I tried to say earlier - it also WTC fault and they forcing (don't restrain) athletes to take it.

I've had a brain storm!!!!!

Why not introduce a third wave for all comers PED class.[Drug cheats]

No restrictions on the sh@t you take.

Signed waver for when you die mid race so no one is liable.

One last thing, all finishes tested and if negative you face a lifetime ban
