U.S. duathletes Tim Menoher and Jenifer Padilla won the elite titles at the USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships on Saturday in Mason, Ohio, while Jeffrey Boyd and Christine Knight took the overall age group titles on Sunday. Menoher (Covington, Ky.) had the best times on both of the run courses, completing the 10k in 32 minutes, 40 seconds and the 5k in 17:11 for a total time of 1:51:30. Defending U.S. champion Eric Schwartz (Boulder, Colo.) was second in 1:53:09 and Peter Watson of Canada was third in 1:53:36.

In the women's elite race, Talis Apud-Martinez of Mexico was the winner in 2:05:01. Padilla (Tustin, Calif.) was the first U.S. elite finisher and second overall in 2:06:04 and Switzerland's Julia Stokar was third in 2:08:04. Amory Rowe, the defending champion, missed the race because of injuries.

Menoher, Schwartz, Padilla and Kimberly Hager (The Woodlands, Texas), who finished fourth overall in the women's race, all qualified for the 2005 International Triathlon Union Duathlon World Championships on Sept. 25-26 in Newcastle, Australia.

Heat and humidity took its toll on many of the elite and age group duathletes and several did not finish the 10k run, 40k bike and 5k run, which ended in Mason Stadium. Boyd (Atlanta, Ga.), 25, survived it all, and even a rain shower, to win the overall age group title in 1:56:54. Chuck Dumke (Boone, N.C.), 38, was second in 1:57:12 and Sean Ion (Shippenville, Pa.), 24, was third in 1:57:50.

In the women's race, Knight (Eagle, Idaho), 36, finished just seven seconds ahead of ITU long distance duathlon world champion Kristin Villopoto (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Villopoto was leading until Knight passed her with just 400 meters to go. 44. Knight completed the race in 2:11:31 and Villopoto in 2:11:38. Kat Clewley (Greensboro, N.C.), 26, was third in 2:12:41. The top six finishers in each age group qualified for the Duathlon World championships in Newcastle. Slots roll down to the top 15.

Yasmine White (Arcata, Calif.) and Beau McDougall (Henderson, Nev.) won the girls' and boys' junior elite races, both of which consisted of a 4.2-mile run, a 12.4-mile bike and a 1.55-mile run. White, 15, who finished in 1:19:22, was the only finisher among the girls. McDougall, 17, won the boys' race in 1:11:48. Shaun Boedicker (Powell, Ohio), 16, was second in 1:15:22 and Andrew Welsh (Loganville, Ga.), 17, was third in 1:16:25. All these athletes qualified for the ITU Duathlon World Championships.

Heard Mike Smith (4th amateur) went down on the bike, which probably cost him a spot or maybe more. Roads were wet from rain.

I was talking to Mike after the race and he said he fell on the run. I almost did the same thing on one of the stripes on the road as well. Very slick.
