Polikarpenko just told me that he has got stop&go penalty for littering on course (after he ask marshal – well, in his broken English – if he can throw away plastic bottle he has been carrying for 10 mi under his trisuite )
WHAT IS ANOTHER BIG VICTORY OF USAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-(

It wasn't a course marshal he asked but a policeman stopping cross-traffic before he heaved his water bottle onto the lawn with nary a garbage can or aid station in sight. He also choose to do so in front of 3 other pro's and 2 USAT officials.

Many races are having trouble getting municipalities to re-sanction races due to litter and you can imagine how much the home owners of these million dollar homes along the lake like having discarded items tossed into their front yards. All racers, not just pro's jeopardize races by littering. USAT officials either enforce the rules fairly and across the board to Pro's and Age Groupers alike, or they are meaningless.

In a race with $160,000 onthe line for first an athlete should not be given a stop and go penalty for littering. No other sport in the world would do that to their pro athletes. There's a reason why the WTC/Ironman doesn't sanction with USAT anymore, and it's partly due to the infexibility of the rules.

take a gander at coverage of the Tour de France - guys in the break all day are heaving everything they own except the shirts off of their backs in trying to "lighten the load to have a go" in the finales or on the climbs. unreal.
and if people with those million dollar homes can't get geed up about a little NATIONAL TV time for their 'hood, then that is a REAL shame!!!

Damn, I'm more ticked at the garbage from down the street that invariably gets blown into my yard at least twice a week!!!!

LATE

right on Eric, integrating some judgement and common sense should not be too much to ask.
