USA Triathlon has named the October 23rd, 2005, American Zofingen ultra-distance duathlon as a Team USA qualifier for the ITU Long Course Duathlon World Duathlon championship to be held on May 28, 2006 in Fredericia, Denmark. Age group slots will go 4 deep.
Top American professional, Josh Beck (3rd at the 2005 Powerman Zofingen World Championship), has confirmed his entry in American Zofingen, informing the organizer of the race that "I'm not afraid of your little race." Challenging Josh Beck for the overall win will be fellow Keystone State hard man, Jeff Timm, who isn't letting the small matter of a pacemaker implant keep him away. Other noted elite entries include John McGarva, Ryan Jones and Corey Boilard.
Speaking of the one and only Powerman Zofingen, Stefan Ruf, President Powerman World Championships, Zofingen-Switzerland, has this to say:
"I am very glad that a new Duathlon event takes an important place in the American race calendar. The American Zofingen refers to the most famous Duathlon of the world, Powerman Zofingen in Switzerland, held since 1989 and the next time 27th August 2006. Zofingen is to the sport of Duathlon what Hawaii is for Triathlon: Long, demanding, prestigeous, one of the races every long distance athlete has to finish at least once in his life. The new race in New York underlines the growing demand of athletes to compete in long distance duathlons. I wish the organiser and the competitors all the power to make it a successful event, maybe to make the American Zofingen a candidate for an official Powerman Duathlon event one day in the near future. If you finish the "American Zofingen" you are ready for the real Zofingen."

John -
If you believe I will be challenging Josh Beck for the overall win at the American Zofingen, I have a 'bridge to nowhere' you may want to buy! I'll tell you what: make Josh ride the run portions, and run the cycle portion, that way I have a realistic chance to beat him. Now Ryan Jones - I can kick his butt any day of the week :D .

Ryan, now I know it looks like Jeff is calling you out, but he is, in fact, a very old man. Please be gentle. JM - But, please humble this wanker, Josh Beck. I'd do it myself, but it wouldn't look right, being the organizer and all...

All righty then!!! The check is in the mail McGovern!!! I am counting on some top notch competition when I get to High Falls!!! Since guys like Chickenman, Mouth, Zboy and Cech are no where to be found, I guess it may be up to me to make this race!!!
Using the illustrious Cleveland Reverse Taper, I should be in top form and ready to lay some smack down from the start gun (or whatever noisemakers they use out in the hills). Let me say this - I never met a hill I didn't like, kind of like the ladies - EVEN if that means a slumpbuster!!!
All I can say is don't let a schlep sponsored by beer, pizza and ice cream get to the podium of this race!!!!

Plenty of women have entered, all fiercely strong, and all are invited.

Krol - I haven't seen Chickenman since Zofingen 1999. He got married and dropped off the face of the earth (maybe the Toronto Globe and Mail swallowed him up?) But it is about time you got off your big butt and did a race somewhere besides Ohio or Switzerland. Your Cleveland Reverse Taper may work in Ohio, but NooYawkState is a whole nother animal, as they say. With my newly installed electrical system, I have more than enough watts to take on you and any of your Ohio cronies you care to bring along with you! Bring Dr. Mark (especially since he retired after PM Zofingen last year), bring all your clydesdales (the heavier the better), you can all stay at McGovern's house. Tell him I said it was okay. Just make sure Josh doesn't get any sleep:)

Sparky sez only punks stay in houses; there's plenty of room to pitch a tent at the venue.

Timm-
That's right - ol' Big City Snyder and I ran him into submission at about the 6km mark (that single trak section of the old 2nd run course) back in 99. And trust me, since I got rid of Snydley Whiplash, I am training like a fiend!
As for the size of my ass, yeah, I'll vouch for the fact that it may not be a one-hander, but the main thing is that it isn't hairy!
Dr Polski - this guy outta be ready to go at the drop of a hat, seeing that he's got a nice 4-5 hour training session regimen as part of his "retirement!!!!!"
if McGovern could have one, JUST ONE athlete stay at his place, please PLEASE let it be Dirty Cech!!!! that kid can spell the ruin of many! and it isn't just the mooching!
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...PREPARE FOR ALL-OUT FARRGIN' WAR!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, since my check book hasn;t kept up with my weight, I am going to be a no show - BUTT, I wouldn't not mind designing a cool trophy for the winner - something like the first Ironman trophy - which was a steel stick figure. Maybe a duathlon.com special award for something other then being fast

Jeffrey- you old sly dog- Ya know- I actually did not have a hankerin for the start line all year until the week before Zofingen this year. It was an odd , spiritual kinda thing even though I did not know the actual date. I have been working on a transporter to beam me down to the bottom of all hills after climbing up- when it is done- "I'll be BACK"....
The only other way to entice me is to have RICE cakes available. Saw Popolski Krolski- he looks buffed- not sure if it's from keepin the ladies happy or from training- odd gears he's pushin...........
well - it is a powerman kinda day today- 48 and raining- gonna go for a run, ride, then go turn the sand over in the volleyball pit so my daughter can practice her footskills...aaaahhh to be young again - Good Luck all- sounds like fun- practice your swiss- veesbotenvolkswagenweinerschnitselstrudel.....YA!

Erik - Why don't you bring your State College posse to the American Zofingen? You can let Mark and Sparky hold down the fort for the weekend, and you can bring that big can of Whoop-Ass you've been hiding in the refrigerator! And speaking of Whoop-Ass, how about we drag old Craig Lowry out of his lair in Harrisonburg so he can show us how it's done.He was making noise a month ago, threatening to show up to win the "first race in 5 years" award. But I have the "guy who talks the most smack" award already wrapped up. Tough luck, Krol. See you guys on the start line...

Listen here-
It is all gonna come down to a no-holds-barred how- much-fried chicken-can-you-eat at the finish line tent! Someone ask McGovern if he can get a portable hot tub up at the parking lot.
Jeff - with the new electrical wiring - better hope someone doesn't pull a C3PO on you at mile 10 of R2!! WOW - HOW DID I COME UP WITH THAT ONE!!
And now that I've gotten 2 days of training in the piss up here that is Siberia, I am good to go. Rain, 42 degrees, fog, snow - JUST BRING IT! You'd just better hope that a few girls show up to take in my studliness!!! I may just have to institute a little Ric Flair strut when I cross the finish line!!!!
All that is left for THE NATURE BOY here is to get the sub-17lb race steed built up!

There's plenty of reasonable lodging at NYS Thruway exit 18, New Paltz. To get to the venue, at exit 18, take a left onto 299. Proceed through town to bridge over Wallkill River. Take the first right after bridge, Rt. 7 / Springtown Road (there will be signs for Mohonk). Proceed about a 1/2 mile to a fork and fork left, Rt. 6 / Mountain Rest Rd. Stay on this road to the top of the mountain, and then descend 1 mile to a left hand bend. The entrance to Mohonk Preserve, Spring Farm (27 Upper Knolls Rd) is on the right. Drive in 1 mile and you'll be at parking, start/finish, and transition. Parking for the event is limited, but there's an additional parking area available to the public for pay.
